BOSTON – Hosting its first Patriot League series of the season, the Boston University softball team posted a doubleheader sweep over Lafayette.
The Terriers (30-7, 5-0 PL) first used senior
Caitlin Coker's walk-off three-run inside-the-park homer for an 8-0 game one run-rule victory and then scored three quick runs in the first inning to claim a 4-2 game two win over the Leopards (4-25-1, 1-7 PL). Overall, BU totaled 12 hits and limited Lafayette to just four, as senior
Allison Boaz (14-4) and freshman
Kasey Ricard (12-2) combined for 16 strikeouts in the circle.
Coker finished the day 3-for-5 with a team-high four RBIs and three runs scored, while junior
Kayla Roncin went 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles and triple alongside two runs scored. Both graduate student
Emily Gant and junior
Lauren Keleher scored two runs apiece, while graduate student
Nicole Amodio had her second homer of the season.
Boaz recorded five strikeouts against one walk in her sixth shutout of the season and 17th career, while Ricard tallied 11 strikeouts against two walks. The duo along with senior
Lizzy Avery had pitched 33 straight scoreless innings until Lafayette hit a two-run homer against Ricard in the second inning for its lone runs of the day.
GAME 1: BU - 8, Lafayette - 0 (6 inn.)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Boaz started the first and ended the second with back-to-back strikeouts.
- With Gant (single) and junior Kate Pryor (walk) in scoring position, Amodio hit a two-out hard liner to right that was dropped, allowing both Terriers to score for a 2-0 lead.
- Kaili Reitano hit a one-out double in the fourth trying to mount a rally, but Boaz earned a pair of ground outs to keep the Leopards off the screoboard.
- Amodio then launched an 0-1 pitch to left center off the video board pole in the bottom half for a 3-0 advantage.
- After BU loaded the bases on walks with one out in the fifth, junior Lauren Nett hit an RBI single and Pryor hit an RBI sac fly to extend the lead to 5-0.
- The Terriers walked off with the run-rule victory in the sixth, as Keleher hit a one-out single, advanced to third on Roncin's double down the right field line and then scored on Coker's inside-the-park homer that flew by the Leopards' diving left fielder.
GAME 2: BU - 4, Lafayette - 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Ricard started the game with a pair of strikeouts, the Terriers jumped out to a 3-0 off three hits that included Roncin's double and Coker's RBI single.
- Freshman Brooke Deppiesse followed Gant's RBI grounder with a two-out RBI single to left.
- The Leopards got on the scoreboard for the first time on the day in the second by earning a one-out walk and then a two-run blast by Megan Coyle to cut the deficit to 3-2.
- BU quickly struck back during the bottom half with senior Audrey Sellers drawing a one-out walk and scoring on Roncin's RBI triple to right center.
- Lafayette managed just one more single and walk, as Ricard tallied seven more strikeouts en route to the 4-2 victory.

- The teams will wrap up the weekend series on Sunday (April 9) at 12 p.m.
- BU is currently 27-0 all-time against the Leopards.
