Terriers Notch Comeback Win Over Great Danes, 3-2

BOSTON – The Boston University women's soccer program scored two goals in 60 seconds, the latter in the 83rd minute, to secure a come-from-behind, 3-2 victory over UAlbany on Sunday evening at Nickerson Field.

After the Great Danes (1-3-0) converted two goals on set pieces early in the second half, senior Lily Matthews notched the equalizer with 8:02 to play. BU (2-1-1) then earned a corner kick a minute later, when sophomore Mackenzie Stickelman headed in the go-ahead score with 7:02 on the clock to seal the win.

Stickelman's goal was the first in her collegiate career. Classmate Natalie Godoy also achieved that feat with a tally in the 11th minute. Junior Morgan Fagan, sophomore Giulianna Gianino, and freshman Samantha Aronson each notched an assist.

Hailey Hnis and Iola Cotter found the back of the net for UAlbany, with Tiffany Bernot providing the assist on the latter's goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU's first goal came as Gianino and UAlbany keeper Megan Hart collided on a loose ball from six yards out. The ball trickled away from both on the ground, where Godoy collected it and deposited the ball into the open net.
  • Both sophomores nearly connected against on Gianino's 12-yard free kick to the left of the box, but Godoy's header floated wide left.
  • In the 25th minute, a Terrier turnover on a back pass allowed Brooke Pickett to race towards the net, but junior goalkeeper Celia Braun made a point-blank save coming out of goal from eight yards away.
  • Sophomore Shayla Brown inserted a corner kick from the right side, and it found Gianino near the left post for a shot that clanged off the iron.
  • Ten minutes into the second half, redshirt senior Kayla Ross shook off a defender by the top-right corner of the box for a shot that narrowly sailed wide right.
  • The Great Danes were awarded a penalty kick in the 58th minute from a foul atop the box. Hnis buried the attempt in the bottom-right corner past a diving Braun.
  • Generating a free kick near the left sideline in front of the UAlbany bench in the 62nd minute, Bernot zipped the ball to Cotter in the box, whose header slipped over Braun's fingertips as she leaped to make the play.
  • BU's equalizer came as Fagan settled the ball by the right sideline and raced to the corner. Her cross eluded two Great Danes to find Matthews for a left-footed blast into the lower-left corner in the 82nd minute.
  • Camping six yards out at nearly the same spot where Matthews buried the previous goal, Stickelman flicked Aronson's out-swinging corner into the left side of the net, behind a diving Hart and a UAlbany defender.
  • The Great Danes nearly leveled the match with 5:17 to go, as Cotter ringed a shot off the crossbar.
  • As the clock raced down to 1:22, Braun lined up Bernot's blast for her third and final save of the evening.
STATS
