Weimar Paces Terriers in 51-39 Victory over Lafayette

BOSTON - Senior Caitlin Weimar posted a double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds and added career highs of seven blocks and four steals to lead the Boston University women's basketball team to a 51-39 home victory on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym.

The Terriers broke a 14-14 tie and never trailed the rest way as they held the Leopards to 24.6-percent shooting from the floor. BU improves to 13-6 overall and 5-3 in Patriot League play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lafayette scored the first five points of the game and BU did not score a field goal until 4:29 into the game.
  • Weimar's third basket of the game created a 10-10 tie with 2:26 left in the opening quarter and that score would carry on to the next quarter.
  • BU took the lead with the first points of the second to take its first lead but the visitors quickly scored a pair of buckets to regain the lead.
  • Two free throws by sophomore Alex Giannaros drew a double team to feed sophomore Anastasiia Semenova on the left block for a layup, then freshman Aoibhe Gormley's runner in the paint knotted the score at 30-30. Smith made an open layup with 18 seconds on the clock to give Army West Point the two-point halftime lead.
  • Two free throws by Alex Giannaros broke a 14-14 tie and kickstarted an 8-0 run as BU took the lead for good and held a 24-17 advantage at the half.
  • A 3-pointer by freshman Audrey Erickson created the first double-digit lead of the contest at 32-22 with 5:34 remaining in the third quarter.
  • BU led by at least eight points the rest of the way en route to the victory.
     
STATS
  • The Terriers made all 11 of their free-throw attempts.
  • BU shot 36.7 percent from the floor.
  • Lafayette held a slim 37-34 edge in rebounds, including 17 on the offensive glass that led to 18 second-chance points.
  • The Leopards had three players in double figures, led by 11 from Abby Antognoli.
  • Giannaros had 10 points and a team-best three assists. 
  • Erickson and fellow rookie Aoibhe Gormley had five and four points, respectively.

NOTES
  • Weimar has secured a double-double in 10 of her last 11 games, giving her 14 on the year and 38 as a Terrier.
  • BU is now 10-1 at The Roof this season with six straight home wins.
  • The Terriers are now tied for third with Army West Point in the Patriot League standings.
     
UP NEXT
  • BU will visit Holy Cross on Monday (Jan. 29) in a rematch of the 2023 Patriot League title game.
  • The game, which starts at 4 p.m., kicks off a doubleheader with the men's squads and both contests will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
