Terriers Stay Unbeaten In PL After 1-1 Draw Against Mids

BOSTON – Freshman Jaiden Schultz tallied her first-career goal to supply the offense for the Boston University women's soccer program in a 1-1 draw against Navy on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.

BU (2-7-4, 2-0-2 PL) scored first in the 33rd minute on Schultz's tally, only for the Mids (8-6-1, 2-1-1 PL) to respond three minutes later. Both sides combined for 11 second-half shots, but did not alter the scoreboard from there.

Freshman Juliana Osterman picked up an assist on the goal, while classmate Bridget Carr made one save between the posts. Junior Giulianna Gianino paced all student-athletes with six shots.

Isabella Romano accounted for Navy's lone goal, with Chiara Cosenza providing the assist. Natasha Stramrood collected four saves between the posts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first shot of the match came from Gianino's boot in the second minute, but Stramrood collected the chance to her left.
  • On BU's second corner kick of the day, Gianino's insert got loose in the box, but the Mids cleared it away in the 17th minute before the Terriers could connect on a shot.
  • Navy cleared another Terrier corner in the 27th minute, but Gianino regained possession to whip a shot into the side netting wide of the right post.
  • Schultz and Osterman linked up on a give-and-go play in the 33rd minute, with Osterman crossing the ball from the left corner to meet Schultz's right leg for the first goal of the match.
  • Stramrood corralled Schultz's attempt at a brace in the 36th minute. On the counter, Cosenza settled the second touch to pass off to Isabella Romano, who lofted a try over a leaping Carr to level the match.
  • Sophomore Ava Maguire worked around a Navy marker in the 42nd minute, but her shot rolled wide left, keeping the score 1-1 as half time arrived.
  • Navy nearly went ahead two minutes out of the break as Amanda Graziano connected on a cross, but sent the shot high over the crossbar.
  • Junior Margy Porta went the other way in the 50th minute, turning on a shot that required Stramrood to dive to her right for the stop.
  • Carr's lone stop came in the 74th minute when she crouched down to snag Mackenzie Morrow's chance near the top-left corner of the 18-yard box.
  • The Mids' best chance of the half manifested when Cosenza's blast rang off the left post in the 80th minute.
  • After blocking Graziano's shot in the 81st minute, senior Morgan raced down the other end a minute later, crossing to Gianino in the middle. However, the latter's shot zipped wide left.
  • Gianino stood on a 20-yard free kick opportunity with 3:13 remaining in regulation. She curled the shot towards the right post, but Stramrood was there for the save.
STATS
  • BU sported a 10-8 edge in shots, including 5-2 in shots on target. The Terriers were up 6-1 in that category in the first half.
  • Corner kicks also favored BU, 8-2.
  • Carr, Gianino, and junior Helene Tyburczy played the full 90 minutes for the Terriers.
