Seventeen Terriers Named to NHL Opening-Night Rosters
October 8, 2024 | Men's Ice Hockey
BOSTON - Seventeen former Boston University men's ice hockey standouts have been named to NHL opening-night rosters for the 2024-25 season.
That number is tied for second in all of college hockey and no other Hockey East school boasts more alumni on NHL opening-night rosters than BU, with Terriers skating on 14 different teams. Two of those Terriers - Charlie Coyle and Charlie McAvoy - play locally for the Boston Bruins. A.J. Greer (Florida Panthers) and Matt Grzelcyk (Pittsburgh Penguins) are both on new teams to start the 2024-25 campaign. Clayton Keller is on the newest NHL team, as he was just named the first captain of Utah Hockey Club after the Arizona Coyotes suspended operations and Utah acquired the Coyotes' hockey assets. Evan Rodrigues enters the season as a reigning Stanley Cup champion, having won the game's ultimate prize this past June with Florida.
In addition to the talented Terriers taking the ice this season, an NCAA-leading two alumni will be serving as NHL head coaches. John Hynes returns for his second year with the Minnesota Wild while Mike Sullivan enters his 10th season behind the Pittsburgh bench.
A total of 94 Terriers have played at least one game in the NHL, with Lane Hutson the most recent to do so when he debuted for the Montreal Canadiens in April. Macklin Celebrini is set to become the 95th Terrier to play in the NHL when the San Jose Sharks begin their season on Thursday night.
