No. 9 Terriers Set for Home-and-Home Series with No. 17/16 UMass Lowell

The No. 9 Boston University men's ice hockey team will return to Hockey East play this weekend when the Terriers face No. 17/16 UMass Lowell in a home-and-home series that begins Friday night at Agganis Arena before concluding on Saturday at Tsongas Center. Puck drop on Friday is set for 7 p.m., with Saturday's showdown slated to start at 6:05 p.m.

TERRIER TIDBITS

  • The Terriers are facing a top-20 foe for the third straight weekend, having most recently dropped a pair of home games to then-No. 11 Michigan on Nov. 1 and 2.
  • Freshman Alex Zetterberg recorded the first two-point night of his young collegiate career on Saturday night, scoring a goal and assisting on senior Matt Copponi's first goal as a Terrier.
  • Freshman Cole Eiserman lit the lamp in Friday's game for his fifth goal of the season.
  • No other league rookie has more goals than Eiserman, who is the reigning Hockey East Player of the Month.
  • Eiserman (5g, 2a), junior Quinn Hutson (1g, 6a) and sophomore Shane Lachance (2g, 5a) are all tied for the team lead in points with seven apiece.
  • BU is the only school in Hockey East that boasts three freshmen with five or more points this season.
  • Zetterberg (3g, 2a) and classmate Cole Hutson (1g, 4a) have notched five points apiece.
  • BU enters the weekend with the seventh-best power play in the country, clicking at 28.6%.

SERIES HISTORY

  • BU is 81-36-12 (.674) in 129 all-time meetings with the River Hawks.
  • That includes a 13-11-3 record against UML since the start of the 2014-15 campaign.
  • BU has won three straight games against UMass Lowell, including a weekend sweep last November.
  • Eight of the last 11 contests have either been decided by one goal or finished even.
  • BU is 15-8-3 (.635) against Lowell at Agganis and 18-18-5 (.500) at Tsongas Center 
  • In 18 overtime games, BU is 6-0-12 versus Lowell.

SCOUTING THE RIVER HAWKS

  • After going just 8-24-4 last season, UMass Lowell is off to a 5-1-0 start.
  • The River Hawks dropped their season opener to Minnesota Duluth but have won five straight games, including a 5-4 overtime win at Holy Cross last Friday.
  • UML has given up the first goal in each of its last four wins; the River Hawks trailed Holy Cross, 3-0, until midway through the second period.
  • Senior Owen Cole leads UMass Lowell with eight points on four goals and four assists.
  • Graduate defender Ben Meehan leads the team with six assists while freshman Chris Delaney paces UML with five goals.
  • Both Meehan and Delaney are tied for second on the squad with seven points apiece.
  • Graduate student Henry Welsch has won all five of his starts, posting a .919 save percentage and a 1.85 goals-against average in the process.
  • Welsch has not needed to make more than 24 saves in any of his five wins.
