Terriers Drop Contest at No. 2 UConn

HARTFORD, Conn. — Senior Alex Giannaros led the Boston University women's basketball team with 13 points, but the Terriers (1-1) fell to the No. 2 UConn Huskies (1-0) at the XL Center on Thursday night.

Giannaros knocked down three triples and grabbed four rebounds in the loss, and freshman Allison Schwertner grabbed nine boards and snagged three steals to lead the Terriers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers held the Huskies to just 2-of-7 shooting in the first 4:10 of the game, but UConn jumped out to a 5-0 lead.
  • After a timeout, the UConn lead swelled, ending the quarter on a 26-6 run. Sophomore Sisi Bentley scored four points for the Terriers in the quarter.
  • At the end of the first half, the Huskies held a 60-13 lead off 19 Terriers turnovers. Bentley, the Hartford native, was the leading scorer with four points and sophomore Aoibhe Gormley knocked down a three with 3:07 to play in the half.
  • As the second half got underway, the Terriers responded to an early 7-0 run from UConn with a 9-0 run of their own, fueled by two Giannaros triples and a jumper from Gormley.
  • The Terriers only gave up 12 points in the third and turned the Huskies over four times to make it 72-22 after the quarter.
  • Giannaros added five to her total in the fourth quarter, bringing her scoring to 13 points on the game, but the Huskies pulled away, winning 86-32.
STATS
  • The Terriers turned UConn over 12 times, including nine times in the second half, while committing 14 of their own.
  • Following Giannaros was Gormley, with seven points, and Bentley, who went 3-of-5 and scored six points in her return to her hometown of Hartford.
  • As a team, BU shot 26.7 percent and was 5-of-17 (29.4%) from three.
  • The Huskies led for 37:39 of the game.
  • UConn forced 33 turnovers and scored 37 points off turnovers.
NOTES
  • Giannaros has now tallied 999 career points, powering her way for 11 second-half points after just two in the first half.
  • Freshman Hildur Gunnsteinsdóttir notched her first career field goal after sinking a three-pointer with 2:23 to play.
  • This was the second straight year where the Terriers played a top-10 ranked opponent after falling at No. 7 Colorado last year.
  • Giannaros also had her second straight year of scoring 10+ points against a top-10 team, as she scored 16 in that matchup with the Buffaloes.
  • The Huskies have now won all seven of the last seven meetings, with the last Terriers win coming in 1984.

  • The Terriers will host Emmanuel next Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. in Case Gym for an exhibition contest with the Saints.
