Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

No. 9 Terriers Fall to No. 17/16 UMass Lowell, 5-3

BOSTON - Sophomore co-captain Shane Lachance potted a pair of power-play goals, but the No. 9 Boston University men's ice hockey team fell to No. 17/16 UMass Lowell, 5-3, on Friday night at Agganis Arena.

BU (4-4-0, 1-1-0 Hockey East) erased a 3-1 deficit thanks to a Lachance strike in the second stanza and a highlight-reel play from freshmen Cole Eiserman and Cole Hutson midway through the third period, but UMass Lowell (6-1-0, 2-0-0 HE) responded with two goals in a span of 34 seconds to restore its two-goal lead that it never relinquished.

Lachance (2g), Eiserman (1g, 1a) and junior co-captain Ryan Greene (2a) all had two points apiece while junior Quinn Hutson joined his brother in recording one assist.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lachance drew a hooking penalty on the River Hawks at the 11:42 mark of the opening period and then capitalized on the ensuing power play just 13 seconds later when he screened Henry Welsch (26 saves) and redirected Q. Hutson's shot from above the left circle into the back of the net.
  • Connor Eddy evened the score early in the second period before Ian Carpentier and Ben Meehan gave the River Hawks a 3-1 lead at the midway point of the contest.
  • Lachance made it a one-goal game with his second power-play goal of the night at 14:45. Once again, the Terrier man advantage wasted no time as Lachance redirected Eiserman's one-timer past Welsch just 25 seconds into the opportunity.
  • BU had several chances to tie the game late in the frame, but Welsch and the River Hawks held off the Terriers' late-period push.
  • Eiserman knotted the game at 3-3 off an incredible outlet pass from C. Hutson at 9:00 of the third period. Hutson took his time picking the perfect lane before firing a slap-pass from his own goal line to Eiserman at the UML blue line. Eiserman then beat Welsch high to the glove side on the breakaway.
  • The River Hawks quickly regained the lead soon after with two goals 34 seconds apart, with the first tally coming on their lone power play of the evening.
  • BU pulled senior Mathieu Caron (22 saves) with 2:20 remaining but didn't strike with the 6-on-4 advantage.

GAME NOTES

  • Lachance doubled his season goal total to four with his fifth career multi-goal performance.
  • The Terriers have scored a power-play goal in seven of their eight games this season, going 2-for-3 with the man advantage on Friday.
  • Eiserman and Lachance remain tied for the BU lead in points with nine apiece.
  • In addition to leading the Terriers in goals, Eiserman is tied for first among all NCAA rookies with six goals this season.
  • BU has scored at least one goal in each of the last six periods of play, excluding overtimes.
