BOSTON – Paced by a career-high 26 points from sophomore
Kyrone Alexander, the Boston University men's basketball team held off UAlbany in overtime, 80-74, on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym.
Leading the defensive effort with a personal-best seven blocks, senior
Malcolm Chimezie scored on the final shot of regulation to send the game into overtime, and the Terriers (4-5) trailed for only one possession in the extra session against the Great Danes (6-4).
Alexander flushed four of BU's nine 3-pointers on his way to 20+ points for the third time this season while adding three assists and two steals. Classmate
Michael McNair turned in a 16-point performance, and freshman
Ben Defty added a personal-best 12 points. Besides dishing out a career-high five assists, Chimezie joined graduate student
Miles Brewster in tallying nine points apiece with both men also hauling in a team-high five rebounds alongside Alexander and McNair.
Five Great Danes scored in double figures with the help of nine of UAlbany's 11 3-pointers. DeMarr Langford Jr. posted a team-high 14 points, while Byron Joshua nearly had a double-double behind 12 points and seven assists. Kacper Klaczek came off the bench with 13 points, and Amar'e Marshall posted 12 points and four steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead thanks to a free throw, a McNair layup and a Kyrone Alexander 3-pointer, forcing a UAlbany timeout just 1:29 into the proceedings.
- The Great Danes battled back to take their first lead of the game, 13-11, with 11:00 on the clock, but five straight points from McNair and back-to-back buckets by Defty gave BU a 20-17 lead at 7:33.
- Shooting 15-for-26 (.577), the Terriers closed the first half on a 9-3 run, with Alexander scoring seven of those nine points, to take a 35-27 lead into the locker room.
- Alexander fed Defty for an emphatic slam dunk at 14:23 to grab BU's largest lead of the game, 45-36.
- Klaczek though scored from behind the arc to spark a 15-1 run that featured Marshall ending the rally with a pair of steals, a fastbreak dunk, a 3-pointer and finally a driving layup at 10:24 to move ahead, 51-46.
- After Alexander hit a pair of free throws to pull within two at 7:51, Joshua flushed a 3-pointer and later added a jumper to give the Great Danes their largest lead, 62-55, with 5:56 left in regulation.
- The Terriers clawed their way back into the game and tied the contest, 64-64, at 1:09 thanks to McNair's putback on his own missed 3-point attempt.
- Langford came right back with a layup, but Chimezie responded in kind with a bucket in the paint at 36 seconds.
- Brewster swiped the ball from Joshua at 11 seconds, as UAlbany tried to drain the clock and attempt the last shot, but the Great Dones prevented BU from breaking the deadlock to head to OT.
- In the extra session, after Langford started off with a short jumper and Baptiste drained a 3-pointer, Klaczek hit UAlbany's final trey at 2:17 to give the Great Danes their last lead, 71-69.
- Chimezie came up with two big assists, setting up Alexander's 3-pointer at 1:56 and then McNair's bucket from behind the arc at 35 seconds to move ahead, 75-71.
- After UAlbany missed a 3-pointer on the next possession, the Terriers scored five points from the charity stripe to seal the victory.
GAME NOTES
- Chimezie's seven blocks were one shy of the program record set three times by BU Hall of Famer Tunji Awojobi ('97).
- Alexander reached 20+ points for the third time this season and fourth overall by topping his previous career high of 23 points set against Loyola Maryland last February.
- Shooting a perfect 6-for-6, Defty became the fifth Terrier to score in double figures multiple times this season.
- The Terriers finished over 50 percent from the field for the second time this season after shooting 54.5 FG% in an earlier win over Dartmouth.
- UAlbany nearly doubled BU in points off turnovers, 17-9, but the Terriers doubled the Great Danes in second-chance points, 16-8, with a 38-28 advantage in points in the paint.
- The Terriers improved to 21-10 all-time against UAlbany after winning the first OT contest between the two programs since BU rallied for an 85-80 win on the road in 2013.
- BU is now 3-1 in OT over the last two seasons.
