AMESBURY, Mass. - Graduate student Cade Webber was selected as Hockey East's Best Defensive Defenseman while freshman Macklin Celebrini collected a trio of awards, including a unanimous selection to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team, as announced on Wednesday.
Webber is the third Terrier to be chosen as the league's top defensive defenseman, joining Chris Dyment (2001-02) and Sean Sullivan (2006-07). Celebrini continued an impressive streak for the Terriers, who have had at least one All-Rookie Team honoree in each of the past 17 seasons. BU's all-time total of 53Â All-Rookie Team selections is the most of any other school.
Webber enjoyed his best season as a Terrier in 2023-24, highlighted by setting a new single-season NCAA record for blocked shots with 118, which eclipsed the old record of 112. He averaged an incredible 3.68 blocks per game, including seven at Providence the night he set the NCAA single-season record, and totaled seven games with six blocks.
A native of Meadville, Pennsylvania, Webber is a career-best plus-16 this season, including a plus-9 rating in 24 league games. He notched five of his career-high six assists during Hockey East play and enters the postseason with one goal and 15 assists for 16 points in 117 career games. Webber is also one of the Terriers' top penalty killers and helped BU kill 25 straight penalties at one point this season.
In addition to his All-Rookie Team accolades, Celebrini was officially crowned the Hockey East scoring champion after leading all skaters with 44 points on 23 goals and 21 assists in 23 league games. His 23 goals in Hockey East play is a league record and he is the only rookie in Hockey East history to average at least one goal per game in league competition. His 44 Hockey East points is tied with former BU standout Jack Eichel (2014-15) for fifth all-time.
Celebrini also became the seventh Terrier to win the Hockey East Three Stars Award, as he compiled the highest total number of points earned when named a first, second, or third star of the game in Hockey East contests. This is the second straight year that a Terrier has earned all those honors in the same year, as sophomore Lane Hutson was a unanimous All-Rookie honoree last season after claiming the league's scoring title and Three Stars Award.
A native of Vancouver, British Columbia, Celebrini not only led the league in scoring but ended the regular season as the NCAA leader in points per game (1.69). The youngest player in college hockey, Celebrini notched an incredible 29 goals and 25 assists for 54 points as a 17-year-old. He was held off the score sheet just five times, and only twice during league play. Celebrini was the Hockey East Player of the Month for October, the National Rookie of the Month for October and the Hockey East Rookie of the Month for January.
