Four Terriers Named Hockey East All-Stars

March 15, 2024

AMESBURY, Mass. - For the second straight year, four members of the Boston University men's ice hockey team were selected as Hockey East All-Stars, the league announced on Friday.

Freshman Macklin Celebrini and sophomore Lane Hutson were named First Team All-Stars, freshman Tom Willander was chosen as a Second Team All-Star and junior Mathieu Caron was picked as a Third Team All-Star. Celebrini was a unanimous selection and joined Willander and Caron in earning a spot on a Hockey East All-Star team in his first season in the league. The men's ice hockey program has now placed 94 Terriers on Hockey East All-Star teams.

Celebrini, the league's scoring champion and Three Stars Award winner, was the only unanimous First Team All-Star. The youngest player in college hockey, Celebrini ended the regular season as the nation's leader with 1.69 points per game. He is also second overall in goals (29) and points (54) entering the postseason. In 23 Hockey East games, Not only did Celebrini pace all skaters with 44 points on 23 goals and 21 assists, but his 23 goals in Hockey East play is a league record and he is the only rookie in Hockey East history to average at least one goal per game in league competition.

Hutson is the fourth Terrier defenseman to be named a Hockey East First Team All-Star in two straight years, and he's the first league defenseman to receive first-team accolades as both a freshman and a sophomore. Hutson leads all NCAA defensemen in points per game (1.34), is tied for first among that group in total points (43) and is third among the nation's blue liners with 12 goals. He is the first defenseman since Western Michigan's Mike Posma (1986-88) to record 10 goals and 30 assists in his first two collegiate seasons. In 24 league games, Hutson led all defenseman and was sixth among all skaters with 34 points (6g, 28a).

Willander was outstanding in his first season of college. He led all Hockey East defenders in plus-minus, both overall (+24) and in league play (+17), and his plus-24 rating is tied for first among all freshmen defensemen in the country. Willander was clearly the best freshman defenseman Hockey East, leading all of the league's rookie blue liners in goals (4), assists (17) and points (21). In fact, only one other freshman defenseman in Hockey East got to 10 points. He has been terrific down the stretch for BU, entering the postseason on a three-game point streak that includes a pair of two-assist efforts.

Caron, a transfer from Brown, has been fantastic in first league campaign. No league goaltender played more minutes than Caron, who started all 34 games for the Terriers. He posted a .917 save percentage and a 2.30 goals-against average across those starts along with two shutouts. Within league play, he finished second in both save percentage (.924) and goals-against average (2.14). Caron ended the season with a 5-0-1 record in his last six starts, posting a .952 save percentage and a 1.34 GAA in that span.

BU will begin its Hockey East title defense on Saturday when the second-seeded Terriers host seventh-seeded Northeastern at Agganis Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
