BOSTON – Seeking its sixth straight Patriot League regular season title, the No. 24 nationally-ranked Boston University softball team will open conference play at Army West Point on Friday afternoon with the doubleheader set for a 2 p.m. start time.
The series was originally scheduled to open on Saturday but was moved up a day due to expected inclement weather. The teams will still face off a third time on Sunday at 12 p.m.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- During the current five-year reign atop the PL standings, BU has posted a 84-9 (.903) record, including a 54-4 (.931) mark over the last three years.
- BU is 6-2 in true road games this season with both losses coming against nationally-ranked programs in then-No. 23/22 South Carolina (3-0 / 8 inn.) and No. 6/8 Duke (4-2). The Terriers won both meetings at Stetson, Charlotte and Coastal Carolina.
- Currently third in program history at 93 walks, senior Lauren Keleher leads BU with 28 runs scored and four homers, while classmate Kayla Roncin owns a team-high 21 RBIs with 22 runs scored and nine stolen bases. Both are hitting .435 to lead the Terriers.
- Graduate student Caitlin Coker (.410) is the third Terrier batting over .400 with six doubles and 17 RBIs, one ahead of sophomore Brooke Deppiesse (.260).
- In the circle, both graduate student Allison Boaz (9-1, 1.49 ERA) and sophomore Kasey Ricard (9-2, 2.08 ERA) rank tied-for-35th at nine victories apiece. They along with graduate student Lizzy Avery (4-0, 1.50 ERA) have helped BU rank ninth nationally at nine shutouts and 12th at 1.74 ERA, thanks in part to a defense that is ninth with a .980 fielding percentage.
- Avery and Boaz have both made an impact at the plate as well with Avery hitting .369 while adding 13 RBIs and Boaz hitting 9-of-18, highlighted by five extra-base hits.
- Overall, BU is batting .329 and holding opponents to .175 while posting a 34-14 advantage in doubles and 28-8 lead in stolen bases.
SCOUTING ARMY WEST POINT
- Army owns wins over Kennesaw State (6-4), Detroit Mercy (7-0), Wagner (3-0) and most recently Rider (5-2) last Saturday. Six of the losses have ben decided by 1-2 runs, including a 2-0 loss to Rutgers and 5-4 defeat at FIU.
- Kayla Edwards is batting a team-high .392 with 12 runs scored, five doubles and eight RBIs. Caitlyn Newburn is the second Black Knight over .300 at .304 with three homers and a team-high 12 RBIs alongside Ashton White (.292).
- Amanda Eaglin (1-8, 4.75 ERA) has made 11 starts, totaling 18 strikeouts in 45.2 innings. Breanna Izzo (1-3, 4.09 ERA) and Olivia Farris (1-5, 5.69 ERA) have combined for 46 strikeouts in 73.1 innings of work.
- Overall, Army is batting .230 while holding opponents to .324 with opponents owning a 40-10 advantage in stolen bases.
SERIES HISTORY
- The Terriers lead the all-time series, 26-11, having won the last 10 meetings with four of those contests being decided by one run.
- Two of the games during the current win streak have been decided by two runs, including the Terriers' 2-0 victory in the PL championship round that saw Boaz tally six strikeouts against four hits.
- BU has won the last four meetings in West Point, including a three-game sweep in 2022 that featured two extra-inning games and an 11-1 run-rule victory.
- The Black Knights last won in 2021 at BU, 7-4, and last claimed a home victory in 2018, 3-2.
