Ricard Shuts Down UConn in No. 25 Softball's DH Sweep

STORRS, Conn. – Totaling 18 strikeouts, sophomore pitcher Kasey Ricard held defending Big East regular season champion UConn's bats at bay over 11 consecutive innings of work to help the No. 25 Boston University softball team claim a doubleheader sweep on the road Tuesday night.

The Terriers (27-3) scored four runs in the second inning of the first contest en route to a 6-3 win and then used junior Tyesha Williams' clutch two-out single to pull out a 1-0 eight-inning pitchers' duel against the Huskies (17-14).

Just hours after being named the National Pitcher of the Week by the NCAA, NFCA and D1Softball, Ricard tallied seven strikeouts in a three-inning game one save. She then earned 11 more strikeouts for her second extra-inning shutout in three days.

GAME 1: BU - 6, UConn - 3

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After stranding two on base in the top of first inning, BU grabbed the lead for good in the second with four runs off a pair of hits.
  • Graduate student Allison Boaz (10-1) earned a quick 1-2-3 to start the contest and opened the top of the second with a lead-off walk before eventually scoring on senior Lauren Nett's RBI bunt.
  • Senior Kayla Roncin added a two-out, two-RBI single to plate both Nett and sophomore Brooke Deppiesse before touching home plate herself on a wild pitch for the 4-0 advantage.
  • The Huskies quickly got on the scoreboard in the bottom half with a two-out single and RBI double to center against Boaz.
  • The Terriers benefited from another wild pitch during the fourth inning to grab a 5-1 lead when graduate student Caitlin Coker singled down the left field line and moved to third on classmate Lizzy Avery's single.
  • UConn tried to mount a rally with two outs by earning a hit-by-pitch, walk and RBI double that plated two runs due to an obstruction ruling at home plate.
  • Boaz prevented further damage by earning a fly out to left.
  • Ricard entered the circle in relief in the fifth and would strike out seven of the following nine Huskies to claim the save.
  • BU added an insurance run in the top of the sixth with Coker earning a one-out walk and scoring on freshman Kylie Doherty's RBI grounder thanks to a pair of wild pitches.
GAME TWO: BU - 1, UConn - 0 (8 inn.)
  • Ricard remained in the circle in the second contest and allowed a two-out double to right in the bottom of the first before earning a swinging strikeout to end the threat.
  • The Terriers had their first runner in scoring position in the fifth via a pair of walks, but UConn kept the game scoreless with a fly out to left.
  • BU had another opportunity in the sixth, as Roncin led off with a single and took second on Coker's sac bunt, but the Huskies recorded a pair of strikeouts.
  • Managing just two hits through the first six innings, UConn put two on with a lead-off walk and two-out walk before striking out a third time in the bottom half against Ricard.
  • With two outs in the top of the eighth, BU scored the go-ahead run, as Coker walked to first, took second on Avery's single to left and scored on Williams' single to left center.
  • Ricard sealed the victory with a ground out and pair of fly outs to the outfield.
UP NEXT
  • The Terriers have a bye in the Patriot League schedule this weekend and will resume conference play at Colgate on April 6-7.
  • BU's home doubleheader scheduled against UMass Lowell on Tuesday, April 2, has been postponed. The Terriers are currently looking to find another opponent for that date.
