Vince D'Alto and
Louis Perfetto had seven-point games and junior
Will Barnes had a 15-save performance as the Boston University men's lacrosse team earned a 13-10 victory over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
D'Alto tallied six goals, including a highlight-reel shot with his back to the goal from eight yards out, and added an assist while Perfetto recorded two goals and five assists.
Juniors Brendan Kelly and
Zach Travaglini notched two goals apiece while Kelly added an assist. Graduate student
Jake Cates registered a goal and an assist while junior
Jimmy O'Connell had an assist.
Junior
Matthew Fritz went 14-of-18 on faceoffs and collected a game-high eight ground balls. Sophomore
Connor Kehm and graduate students
Roy Meyer and
Patrick Morrison each caused a pair of turnovers.
BU never trailed in the contest to improve to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in Patriot League play. Bucknell, which got hat trick from Connor Davis, moves to 2-4 with a 1-1 conference mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The teams traded 3-0 runs to start the game as BU scored the game's first three goals before the Bison battled back to make it a 3-3 contest.
- Kelly opened the scoring off a pass from Cates in transition just over a minute into the game.
- Cates pushed the lead to 2-0 by scoring his seventh goal of the season with 11:10 left in the opening quarter.
- Less than three minutes later, D'Alto got on the board off an assist from Perfetto, giving the Terriers a 3-0 lead.
- Over the following three minutes, the Bison battled back to draw even with goals from Davis, Peter Grandolfo and Hans Huber.
- BU took the lead for good with 5:24 to play in the first on D'Alto's second tally of the afternoon and he capped a first-quarter hat trick at the 3-minute mark with a man-up tally to give the Terriers a 5-3 lead.
- Bucknell scored in the closing seconds of the opening quarter to make it a 5-4 contest heading into the second.
- Only three goals were scored in the second and the Terriers scored two of them as Perfetto and D'Alto each found the back of the net in the frame to create a 7-5 halftime lead for the home team.
- The third quarter proved to be the most decisive with the Terriers outscoring the Bison by a 5-1 margin.
- Travaglini got the lead back up to three just over three minutes into the third before Kelly gave the Terriers their biggest cushion yet at 9-5 with 10:26 remaining in the quarter.
- Neither team scored for the next eight minutes but it was BU that ended that drought when D'Alto provided the highlight of the game with a backwards fling to beat the shot clock with 2:24 left in the third, making it a 10-5 affair.
- Bucknell ended a scoreless drought of over 14 minutes when Huber scored with 1:49 left in the third to create a 10-6 BU lead.
- The largest lead of the contest came at the end of the third as D'Alto notched his sixth with 1:30 left before Travaglini pushed the score to 12-6 with seven seconds remaining in the stanza.
- Bucknell scored the first three goals of the fourth to get within three but that's as close as the visitors would get as Perfetto netted a man-up goal with 2:42 to play and create a 13-9 lead to put away the Bison.
GAME NOTES
- The Bison held a large 47-25 advantage in shots but 22 of their shots were off target.
- BU owned a 36-29 edge in ground balls with Barnes leading all players with eight.
- The Terriers were 2-for-4 on the man-up while Bucknell was 3-for-6.
- Each team had seven failed clears on the afternoon as the Bison were 12-for-19 and the Terriers were 16-of-23.
- Jaz Zanelli made eight saves in goal for the Bison.
