BOSTON – The No. 22 nationally-ranked Boston University softball program extended its unbeaten home streak to 30 games with a 9-0, run-rule triumph over Merrimack in five innings on Thursday afternoon at the BU Softball Field.
BU (42-4-1) scored five runs in the second inning and four in the fourth, capitalizing off three errors from the Warriors (17-29). On the other side, Terrier pitching surrendered just two Merrimack hits while not allowing a runner past second base.
Sophomore
Brooke Deppiesse paced BU's offense with a 3-for-3 effort with three RBI. Graduate student
Caitlin Coker and seniors
Lauren Nett and
Kate Pryor each finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.
In the circle, graduate student
Allison Boaz won her 15th game of the year with four shutout innings and six strikeouts. Classmate
Lizzy Avery struck out two in one inning of relief.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Pryor ignited the bottom of the second inning with a single, stealing second base and advancing to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Boaz's RBI groundout.
- Nett and senior Lauren Keleher both singled, then scored when Roncin's sharp grounder to Sydney Shinopulos at second base wasn't handled cleanly.
- With runners on second and third and two outs, Deppiesse laced a two-run single to center to plate Avery and senior Kayla Roncin, capping the five-run second inning.
- With one out in the top of the fourth, Boaz struck out Thiana Brito swinging. Gabby Kaduson, who was on first, attempted to race to second when the ball got away, but graduate student Audrey Sellers threw her out for the double play.
- The bottom half of the frame began with Coker's line-drive single to center and Avery's third walk of the afternoon. Deppiesse then drilled an RBI double down the left field line to score Coker.
- Doherty then reached on an error from the second baseman Shinopulos as Avery scampered home. Shinopulos then threw the ball over first baseman Bailey McDermott's head, allowing Deppiesse to score.
- Nett closed the scoring with an RBI single that fell between left fielder Hannah Scarano and shortstop Courtney Lanpher, making it 9-0.
- Avery entered the circle to coax a groundout to herself, then struck out Shinopulos and pinch-hitter Jordan Theriault to end the game.
