No. 22 Softball Homers Way to Pair of Shutout Wins at Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. – Boosted by back-to-back fiery pitching performances and five homers, the No. 22/23 nationally-ranked Boston University softball team claimed a doubleheader shutout sweep at Lafayette on Saturday afternoon.

The Terriers (44-4-1, 14-0 PL) scored at least one run in seven consecutive innings over the two contests, first posting a 6-0 game one victory and then a 12-0 (5) run-rule win. In the circle, graduate student Allison Boaz (16-1) and sophomore Kasey Ricard (22-3) combined for 16 strikeouts to limit the Leopards (4-32, 1-13 PL) to just four singles.

Their work helped BU set both a program and Patriot League record with an NCAA leading 25 shutouts on the season, surpassing last year's total of 24. Currently the only pitcher nationally with double-digit shutouts, Ricard became just the second ever Terrier to earn at least 14 shutouts, joining former All-American Audrey West '96 (3x).

Senior Kayla Roncin led the offense batting 5-for-8 with a pair of doubles and four runs scored, while Boaz posted a team-high six RBIs, highlighted by her first career multi-homer performance in the second contest. Graduate student Lizzy Avery went yard for the first time, and classmate Caitlin Coker launched the ball over the wall in both games.

GAME 1: #22/23 BU - 6, Lafayette - 0

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Through the first three innings, Coker was the only player for either side to get on base, hitting a two-out double during her first at-bat.
  • In the top of the fourth, she struck again, this time crushing a pitch to right for the 1-0 advantage.
  • Roncin added another by following up on senior Lauren Keleher's two-out single up the middle with an RBI double to left center.
  • The Leopards committed a two-out error in the sixth, leading to Boaz's RBI double to left for the 3-0 lead.
  • Lafayette threatened in the bottom half with back-to-back singles, but Boaz responded by earning three strikeouts to maintain the shutout.
  • Avery doubled BU's lead in the top of the seventh by following senior Lauren Nett and Roncin's singles with a three-run blast to right center.
  • Trying to mount a rally, the Leopards grounded out three times for the loss.
GAME 2: #22/23 BU - 12, Lafayette - 0 (5 inn.)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU just needed two at-bats to grab the lead for good after Keleher doubled down the left field line and scored on Roncin's RBI single to right center.
  • After Boaz delivered a two-run homer to center to extend the lead to 5-0, Keleher came up for a second at-bat, plating her first run of the day with an RBI single to left.
  • The Terriers nearly doubled their lead in the second inning with five more runs off five hits, including two-run homers from both Coker and Boaz.
  • Sophomore Brooke Deppiesse added a two-out RBI single in the third before BU saw its streak of consecutive innings with a run halted at seven.
  • The Leopards ended Ricard's no-hit bid with a lead-off single in the bottom of the fourth, but Ricard recorded three strikeouts to seal another shutout.
UP NEXT
  • The Terriers will try to earn the series sweep on Sunday (April 28) at 12 p.m on ESPN+.
  • With Lehigh recording a split Saturday at Army, BU is now atop the PL standings alone with next weekend's home series against the Mountain Hawks looming.
