Terriers Outlasted by Lehigh, 14-8

BOSTON – The Boston University women's lacrosse team (4-8, 0-5 PL) suffered a 14-8 loss to Lehigh (7-4, 3-2 PL) on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field. 
 
Lehigh built to an early 5-0 lead in the first quarter before BU could get on the board. The Mountain Hawks continued to dominate and maintained an 11-3 lead headed into the half. The Terriers were able to outscore the Mountain Hawks in the second half but could not catch up, resulting in the 14-8 loss.
 
Sophomore Elle Stevenson led BU's offensive efforts with two goals. Senior Tobey Tick and junior Hannah Tillier each scored one goal and added an assist for two points. Senior Cassie Reinertson, freshman Tessa Geddes and juniors Raegan Bailey and Avery Jones all scored once.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lehigh scored five unanswered goals, including two on woman-up opportunities, through 5:31 in the opening frame.
  • Tick found Jones at the front of the net who scored BU's first goal of the day.
  • Tick then worked her way to the front of the net to score her 50th career goal with 1:03 to go in the first.
  • Lehigh closed out the first frame with another goal to go up 6-2.
  • The Mountain Hawks added two more in the beginning of the second to extend their lead.
  • Geddes found the back of the net with 9:36 to go in the second for BU's final goal of the half.
  • Lehigh tacked on three additional goals to lead 11-3 with the first two quarters gone.
  • BU got the ball rolling in the third when Tillier set up Bailey who scored on a woman-up opportunity.
  • Moments later, Stevenson earned a free position opportunity on which she scored to make it 11-5 in Lehigh's favor.
  • The Mountain Hawks tallied their 12th with 8:48 to go in the third.
  • With 1:30 left in the frame, Reinertson netted her second goal of the season for BU's sixth of the day.
  • Lehigh added a goal with 35 seconds left on the clock to head into the fourth up 13-6.
  • The Mountain Hawks thought they had two additional goals but both were called for a crease violation.
  • Stevenson then responded with an unassisted goal with 10:13 left in the final frame.
  • Lehigh goalkeeper Hayley Hunt received a yellow card for a dangerous collision which resulted in an open net free position opportunity for Tiller who scored.
  • The Mountain Hawks scored once more on the woman-down situation to close out the scoring and bring the final result to Lehigh 14, BU 8.
 
GAME NOTES
  • BU outshot Lehigh 37 to 31.
  • The Terriers scooped up 19 ground balls compared to Lehigh's 18.
  • BU was 19-for-20 on clears while Lehigh was 24-for-27.
  • Lehigh corralled 14 draws while BU earned 12.
  • In net, freshman Natalie Aiosa made seven saves while visiting goalkeeper Hayley Hunt made 16 to tie a career performance.
