No. 16/15 BU Edged by No. 8/9 Yale, 18-16

BOSTON – In a close game with 10 different Terrier goal scorers, No. 16/15 Boston University men's lacrosse fell to No. 8/9 Yale in an 18-16 decision on Tuesday evening. 
 
BU (7-4, 4-1 PL) fell behind 3-0 early but fought back to tie the game by the 9:44 mark in the opening frame. Yale continued to build to an 8-4 lead before BU tied it again in the second, but Yale responded to go up 12-8 headed into the half.
 
The Terriers came back from halftime with force and closed in 12-11 before the Bulldogs could answer as BU held Yale to one goal in the third quarter. Graduate student Vince D'Alto made it a one goal game again when he netted his 154th career goal to become the all-time leading goal scorer at BU in the beginning of the final frame.
 
Goals continued to go back-and-forth through the entire fourth quarter with BU making it a one-goal game and Yale pushing back ahead to a two-goal lead. The battle ended with Yale which scored the last game with a minute to go to bring the final score to Yale 18, BU 16.
 
D'Alto led BU in goals with four while graduate students Louis Perfetto (3G, 2A) and Jake Cates (1G, 4A) led BU in points with five each. Junior Brenden Kelly logged two goals while graduate student Miles Lipton, senior James Corcoran, junior Zach Travaglini, senior Tommy Bourque, graduate student Thomas Niedringhaus and sophomore Jimmy Kohr all scored once. Miles and Corcoran, who scored his first goal of the season in the loss, also added assists. Junior goalkeeper Will Barnes made six saves in net.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Yale went up 3-0 with 2:49 gone in the opening frame.
  • Corcoran found D'Alto moments later as he scored BU's first goal of the game.
  • Rolling with BU's momentum was Perfetto as he scored off a feed from Lipton 47 seconds later.
  • Perfetto then set up Niedringhaus who scored the equalizer with 9:44 left in the first.
  • The Bulldogs responded with another run to go up 6-3.
  • Travaglini added one more for BU at the end of the frame thanks to a pass from Perfetto.
  • Yale went up 8-4 early in the second quarter.
  • Cates found Kohr who scored his third goal of the season at the 10:51 mark.
  • The ball made its way to Lipton who spun around multiple defenders to score BU's sixth of the day. 
  • Kelly took a feed from Cates at the crease to close in on Yale's lead, 8-7.
  • D'Alto came from behind the net and beat out his defender as he shoveled in his record-setting 154th career goal to tie the game once more.
  • Yale did not let the tie last as it went on to score four unanswered goals to end the half.
  • BU came out of the gates at halftime as Cates set up Bourque who scored just 41 seconds into the frame.
  • Corcoran then backed that up with his first goal of the season. 
  • Cates logged his final assist of the game when he found Kelly who helped BU cut into Yale's lead 12-11.
  • Yale scored two more goals in the third which were split on either side of D'Alto's top corner goal.
  • Goals went back and forth in the final stanza starting with the Bulldogs who went up 15-13.
  • Cates then found himself on a different part of the scoresheet when he scored an unassisted goal at the top of the crease.
  • Yale pushed ahead again but Perfetto was able to close in 16-15 with a goal at the 7:17 mark.
  • After Yale extended its lead again, Perfetto worked his way from behind the net and fired off a laser that gave BU its final goal of the game.
  • The Bulldogs added one last goal with a minute to go to bring the final score to Yale 18, BU 16.
 
GAME NOTES
  • BU outshot Yale 64 to 35.
  • Yale narrowly outperformed BU on the faceoff X, 21 to 17.
  • BU was 18-for21 on clears while Yale was 16-for-20.
  • The Bulldogs had 20 turnovers compared to BU's 16.
  • Graduate student Roy Meyer caused three turnovers and scooped up seven ground balls.
  • The Terriers corralled 34 ground balls to Yale's 41.
  • Yale goalkeeper Jared Paquette made 15 saves.

  • BU will play its final home game of the regular season against Lafayette on Saturday for Senior Day.
