May 19, 2024

WORCESTER, Mass. – Three boats competed in Grand Finals for the 12th-ranked Boston University men's rowing team at the Eastern Sprints on Sunday (May 19) at Lake Quinsigamond.

Temperatures floated around the upper-50s, occasionally hitting 60 degrees. Winds reached around seven miles per hour to the southwest as morning rain moved out of the area.

BU's Fourth Varsity 8+, coxed by Hannah Noguchi and stroked by Filippo de Marsanich, started the day for BU and was the first crew to advance to the Grand Final after placing second in its heat at 5:51.488, four seconds behind Yale. In the Grand Final, the Terriers jockeyed for fourth place with Penn and Syracuse, with the Quakers taking that spot with two seconds over BU, who crossed the line in 5:57.896.

The Terrier Third Varsity 8+, coxed by Peter Adams and stroked by Hurst Thompson, went toe-to-toe with Princeton, who fended off BU in the morning's heats. BU advanced to the Grand Final with a time of 5:41.739 in second place, then placed sixth in the Grand Final in 5:51.638.

From there, BU's Varsity 8+, coxed by Emily Slawin and stroked by Bowen de Gouw, beat out Navy and Holy Cross in the third heat with a time of 5:38.107 to move to the afternoon's Petite Final. There, BU and Dartmouth battled it out for the spot, though the Big Green was first and the Terriers second in 5:37.148.

In the Second Varsity 8+, the Terriers, coxed by Jimmy Smith and stroked by Ali El Sayed, were third in 5:36.511, behind a close race between Harvard and Syracuse. BU, Brown, and Penn were facing off for the top spot in the Petite Final, where the Terriers were third in 5:41.348. That was just over two seconds behind the Bears' winning crew.

BU picked up a Grand Final win in the Varsity 4+, coxed by Luke Stroh and stroked by Max Honeybone. The Terriers crossed the finish in 6:33.721, outpacing runner-up Harvard by nearly four seconds.
