LAS VEGAS - Rising sophomore Macklin Celebrini of the Boston University men's ice hockey team was selected first overall by the San Jose Sharks at the 2024 NHL Entry Draft on Friday night at Sphere.
Celebrini became the second Terrier and the fifth college hockey player to be chosen with the No. 1 pick. BU is the only program to produce multiple No. 1 picks in the NHL Draft, as Rick DiPietro was chosen first by the New York Islanders in 2000. Celebrini is the fourth Terrier in school history to be selected first overall in a North American professional sports league, following DiPietro, Kayla Tutino (CWHL, 2016) and Sammy Davis (NWHL, 2020). In addition, Celebrini joins Davis as Terriers who were selected No. 1 by another Terrier, as Mike Grier is the San Jose Sharks' general manager.
In addition to Celebrini, incoming freshman Cole Eiserman was chosen 20th overall by the Islanders. Eiserman totaled 58 goals and 31 assists for 89 points in 57 games this past year en route to setting the NTDP record for career goals (127). On the international stage, the Newburyport, Mass. native has represented the United States at the Under-18 Men's World Championship twice, helping Team USA win gold in 2023 and silver medal this past spring.
Celebrini became the 24th Terrier to be chosen in the first round of the NHL Draft. BU has boasted 15 first-round picks in the last 10 years, including six in the top 10 and 12 in the top 20. Celebrini and Eiserman were the 197th and 198th Terriers to be chosen in the NHL Draft. No other school had more players selected in this year's first round than BU.
More future Terriers are expected to hear their names called on day two of the NHL Draft, which begins at 11:30 a.m. ET on NHL Network and ESPN+.
