Andrew Wike's five saves, the Boston University men's soccer team battled Northeastern to a 1-1 draw at Parsons Field Tuesday evening.
Opening a season with back-to-back ties for the first time in program history, the Terriers move to 0-0-2, while the Huskies now sit at 0-1-1. DeLaMater put BU on the scoreboard first in the 30th minute, and the Huskies took advantage of a penalty kick at 68:39 to net the equalizer.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU quickly applied pressure on Northeastern in the first minute, as sophomore Andrea Di Blasio forced keeper Tobias Jahn to make a diving stop on a curling corner kick toward the back of the goal.
- Wike made his first save in the fourth minute when he stop a low free kick from just outside the box.
- The teams went back-and-forth until DeLaMater broke the scoreless deadlock by intercepting a pass near midfield and driving the ball toward the NU box to set up a hard grounder toward the left post for the 1-0 advantage at 29:23.
- Wike made a pair of saves in the 37th minute to help the Terriers enter the locker room with the one-goal advantage.
- Jahn earned saves of his own at 54:05 and 58:22, respectively, to keep the deficit at one goal.
- The Huskies applied pressure in the 66th minute with back-to-back corners and remained on the attack in the 69th when they drew a foul in the box.
- Fraser Brown converted on the penalty kick by blasting the ball toward the middle with Wike diving to the side.
- Both teams threatened over the final five minutes with a pair of corner kicks apiece but were unable to break the deadlock for the draw.
GAME NOTES
- Senior Kevin Torres, senior Andrew Rent and DeLaMater joined Wike in playing all 90 minutes.
- Sophomore Charlie Tuckerman and freshman Markus Ramsey both made their debut in the scarlet and white, while sophomore Keke Abai saw his first action.
- Northeastern edged the Terriers in shots, 13-11, and in corner kicks, 6-3, with Jahn posting seven saves for the Huskies.
- Both Rent and freshman Dylan Williams tallied a team-high two shots apiece.
- BU and NU have recorded back-to-back draws for the first time ever in the rivalry that dates back to 1984 following last year's 1-1 tie at Nickerson Field. The Terriers now lead the all-time series, 22-10-4, though are 0-2-2 at Parsons Field over the last four contests.
UP NEXT
- The Terriers will remain on the road and visit UMass Lowell on Sunday (Sept. 1) at 6 p.m.
- BU won the last meeting at home, 2-1, in 2023 after dropping a 2-1 double-overtime decision at UML back in 2019.
