BOSTON – The No. 15 Boston University women's ice hockey team came up short in its bid for a Beanpot title on Tuesday, dropping a 4-0 contest to No. 14 Northeastern in the 46th Dunkin' Women's Beanpot championship game at TD Garden.
Â
The game was played in front of 13,279 fans, breaking the New England women's hockey attendance record set in last year's Beanpot title tilt between the same two programs. It was the fifth-largest crowd in NCAA women's hockey history.
Â
Northeastern scored midway through the opening period and then built up its lead late in the second with goals moments apart.
Â
Freshman Lisa Jönsson kept BU off the board with a 30-save shutout, pushing the Huskies to their third straight Beanpot crown.
Â
Senior
Callie Shanahan made 27 saves in goal for the Terriers, who move to 14-8-1 on the season.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After the teams traded penalties just over a minute apart, the teams got back to full strength and Northeastern opened the scoring on an unlucky bounce for the Terriers.
- An attempt from the center point by Lily Yovetich tipped off a BU stick and fluttered into the top left corner of the net at the 11:29 mark.
- The Huskies extended their lead with goals 40 seconds apart late in the second period.
- Northeastern forced a turnover in the BU zone, allowing Jaden Bogden to get a clean shot off that rebounded to the slot, where Lily Shannon sent it in at 17:39 for a 2-0 lead.
- Bogden made it a three-goal cushion for the Huskies moments later when she deflected a left-point bid under the legs of Shanahan.
- The Huskies tacked on an empty-netter with 2:44 left in regulation to create the 4-0 final.
