No. 4 Terriers Fall, 8-4, to UConn

October 24, 2025

BOSTON — The No. 4 Boston University men's ice hockey team scored four goals but dropped an 8-4 decision to the No. 11 UConn Huskies Friday night at Agganis Arena.

The Terriers (2-3-1, 0-1-0 HE) got out to a 2-0 lead in the first eight minutes of the game, but the Huskies (3-2-0, 1-0-0 HE) erased deficits of 2-0, 3-2 and 4-3 and scored five unanswered goals over the final 31 minutes to take home their first Hockey East points of the season.

BU got started with senior Owen McLaughlin's first goal as a Terrier, as he scored at 2:05. Then sophomore Cole Eiserman potted his sixth goal of the year to bump the lead to 2-0 at 7:49 before UConn tied it at 2-2.

McLaughlin quickly turned his first BU game with a goal into his first multi-goal game repping the arched Boston after scoring just 2:05 into the second period. The Huskies tied it again before freshman Jack Murtagh made a dash down the ice and scored his second career goal to retake the lead, 4-3. The Huskies would prevail, however, after five straight goals.

McLaughlin led for BU in goals, but he tied for the points lead with freshman defenseman Malte Vass, who earned two assists — one primary, one secondary — to pick up his first career collegiate points.

Terriers starting goaltender, sophomore Mikhail Yegorov made 26 saves on 32 shots, but was pulled early in the third period. Junior Max Lacroix entered and stopped 6-of-7 shots faced in his nearly 17 minutes of action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • At 6:03 in the first, sophomore Cole Hutson dangled through the offensive zone, found classmate and linemate Aiden Celebrini, who in turn made a pass from behind the net into the slot to find McLaughlin for the easy tally.
  • Just 1:46 later, Eiserman was fed the puck in the slot after a hustle play by Ryder Ritchie to pitch it there, and he beat the UConn netminder for his sixth goal in as many games.
  • The Huskies would answer the early push with one of their own, as they knotted a goal from Carlin Dezainde with 5:28 remianing in the first, then found the net for a power play goal from Jake Richard at 19:02 in the first to take a 2-2 game into the first intermission.
  • McLaughlin's first game with a goal as a Terrier quickly became his first multi-goal game as a Terrier as he buried home a cross-crease pass from junior assistant captain Jack Harvey at 2:05 in the second period.
  • The Huskies evened up the score at 3-3 with a goal from Joey Muldowney at 4:32.
  • Then BU retook the lead as freshman defender Malte Vass chipped the puck down the ice for Murtagh, who was able to corral it and beat the UConn goaltender over his left shoulder to retake the lead, 4-3, at 4:55 in the second.
  • UConn continued to battle back, as it got another goal from Dezainde and leveled the game at 9:04.
  • That goal started a streak of five straight goals for the Huskies, including a power play finish at 12:29 in the second, giving them a 5-4 lead entering the third period.
  • Despite 16 shots on goal and two power plays, BU could not light the lamp in the third.
  • On the other end of the ice, Tom Messineo scored just 1:04 into the third, prompting a goaltender switch for the Terriers as Lacroix entered the net.
  • Tabor Heaslip scored for the Huskies at 9:04 in the third and then got an empty-net goal from Ethan Gardula to seal the 8-4 win.
GAME NOTES
  • While McLaughlin's goals are his first and second in a Terrier uniform, they are his 21st and 22nd all-time and his 88th and 89th points all-time.
  • With seven points coming from newcomers, this marks the sixth straight game to start the year that newcomers have accounted for at least three points.
  • With Vass and freshman defenseman Charlie Trethewey both picking up their first career points, eight newcomers have now accumulated at least one point.
UP NEXT
  • BU will complete the second half of a home-and-home with UConn Saturday night as they travel to the Toscano Family Ice Forum in Storrs, Connecticut.
  • Puck drop is scheduled for 5 p.m.
