Field Hockey Posts 4-1 Road Win Against Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Boston University field hockey team broke a 1-1 halftime deadlock with an impressive second-half performance en route to a 4-1 Patriot League victory at Lehigh on Saturday at Ulrich Field.

Senior Caroline O'Brien scored the game's final two goals while freshman Molly Driscoll provided the game-winner and an assist. Junior Nicole Lauro quickly scored after Lehigh got on the board first just 68 seconds into the contest.

Freshman Shea Freda picked up her first collegiate point with an assist on O'Brien's first goal while junior Maggie Driscoll assisted on her sister's go-ahead goal. Senior Megan Wetzel also earned an assist in the victory.

BU, which got five saves from junior goalkeeper Sophie Ortyl, improves to 5-5 on the year and 2-1 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams scored on their first corner of the contest with the home team striking first just moments after the opening whistle.
  • Lela Boermeester inserted the corner and then scored off a pass from Kiki Mes just 1:08 into the game.
  • Just over a minute later, BU earned its first corner and constructed a quick equalizer.
  • Lauro scored on a low flick from the top of the circle with assists from Wetzel and Molly Driscoll at 2:17.
  • BU had a 3-2 edge in corners the rest of the first half but the teams settled for a 1-1 score going into the half.
  • The Terriers dominated the second half and did not allow a shot for the final 36 minutes of regulation.
  • BU took the lead on a 35th-minute corner when Maggie Driscoll took a pass from Wetzel at the top of the circle and flung the ball towards the cage.
  • After glazing off a Lehigh stick on the way, the ball was slammed down and in by Molly Driscoll at the goalmouth to put the Terriers up 2-1.
  • Just over five minutes later, Freda sent a long entry pass to O'Brien in the right side of the circle, where the senior got a good first touch before lining up a reverse-stick drive that found the boards at 39:59.
  • Up 3-1 entering the fourth, the Terriers were able to add one more to create the 4-1 final.
  • O'Brien and Maggie Driscoll teamed up to cause a turnover outside the BU attacking zone and O'Brien dribbled in through the right side before splitting through the Mountain Hawk defense and slotting a low shot past Lehigh netminder Kate Burgess at the 47:37 mark.
