BALTIMORE, Md. – Despite sophomore Kyrone Alexander earning his first career double-double, the Boston University men's basketball team came up just short at Loyola Maryland, 69-67, on Saturday afternoon.

The Greyhounds (9-12, 4-6 PL) prevailed in a contest featuring 14 lead changes and six ties with the help of a 9-3 advantage in made 3-pointers, as the Terriers (11-12, 5-5 PL) missed their final attempt from behind the arc at the buzzer. Leading by as many as 11 in the first half, Loyola shot 46.9 FG% and held the Terriers to 39.7 percent.

Alexander hauled in a career-high 10 rebounds while tying senior Malcolm Chimezie for a game-high 16 points. Graduate student Miles Brewster was the third Terrier to score in double figures at 13 points, and junior Otto Landrum added a season-high 10 rebounds. They helped BU win the battle at the boards, 36-27, with a 12-4 lead in offensive rebounds to outscore Loyola in second-chance opportunities, 10-3, and in the paint, 42-24,

Four of the Greyhounds' starters finished in double figures with Jacob Theodosiou leading the way with 14 thanks to four 3-pointers on seven attempts. Braeden Speed nearly had a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Milos Ilic and Jordan Stiemke tallied 11 points apiece. Stiemke added four blocks to make BU's life in the paint more challenging.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Freshman Azmar Abdullah netted a 3-pointer with the bonus free throw to give BU its largest lead of the game, 11-8, at 15:52.
  • Facing a 13-12 deficit, Speed and Theodosiou netted back-to-back 3-pointers to spark a 19-7 run capped by Tyson Commander's steal and layup at 7:04 for the Greyhounds' largest lead.
  • The Terriers came right back though with a 14-1 run helped by three Alexander free throws and lastly Chimezie's layup at 1:33 for a 34-32 lead.
  • Commander tied the game a minute later on a floater, and Theodosiou added two free throws at 4.5 seconds to help Loyola enter the locker room ahead, 36-34.
  • After the Greyhounds started the second half with the Ilic brothers scoring in the paint for their largest lead of the second half, 40-34, BU responded with a 10-2 spurt finished by junior Nico Nobili's free throw at 15:19.
  • Nobili later converted on Alexander's steal six minutes later to match BU's largest lead, 56-53.
  • The Terriers though were unable to extend the advantage and would never lead again after Milos Ilic hit back-to-back layups with 7:43 left for a 57-56 lead.
  • Four minutes later, Theodosiou and Commander scored from behind the arc on consecutive possessions to grab a 67-61 lead.
  • BU was able to chip away with sophomore McNair hitting a layup at 2:17 and Chimezie scoring on a putback at 1:21 to pull within two, 67-65.
  • After the Terriers claimed another defensive stop and went 1-of-2 at the charity, Stiemke hit both of his free throw attempts for a 69-66 advantage at 38 seconds.
  • BU again went 1-of-2 at the line but Stiemke missed the ensuing 1-and-1, giving the Terriers life.
