PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Despite sophomore
Kylie Doherty delivering her first career grand slam, the Boston University softball team came up short at Brown, 8-7, on Friday afternoon.
Facing a 4-0 deficit, the Terriers (8-7) rallied to tie the game in each of the last three innings, but the Bears (4-2) had a response in the bottom half each time, including a walk-off solo home run.
Doherty went 2-for-4 and posted a personal-best five RBIs with the help of her third homer of the season and an RBI single. Sophomore
Libby Walsh batted a perfect 2-for-2 with two walks and an RBI bunt single, while junior
Brooke Deppiesse reached home plate twice thanks to a pair of earned walks.
Brown's top three batters went a combined 5-for-10 with six runs scored, and Jasmine Hsiao plated three runs in the No. 5 slot off a two-RBI single and RBI double against junior
Kasey Ricard (4-5). After Alexis Guevara pitched the first five innings with four runs allowed, Macy Borowski (2-0) held BU to three runs over the final two innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Freshman Addie Lucier started the game by reaching second on an outfield fielding error, but Guevara earned two swinging strikeouts and a fly out to keep the Terriers off the scoreboard.
- Brown quickly loaded the bases on three straight singles and jumped on the scoreboard with Hsiao recording a two-RBI single and Deng adding an RBI sac fly.
- BU again had two runners on base via freshman Biz Baglieri's one-out single and Walsh's walk before Guevara earned another strikeout and fly out.
- The Bears added another run in the third thanks to Berlinger's lead-off walk and Hsiao's two-out RBI double to center to move ahead, 4-0.
- The Terriers rallied back in the fifth with sophomore Livia Christopher doubling to left center and eventually reaching third when the Bears walked both freshman Camryn Lyons and Deppiesse.
- With two outs and bases loaded, Doherty launched a 1-1 pitch toward left center for her third homer of the season.
- Brown retook the lead, 5-4, following lead-off single, sac bunt and two-out RBI single but quickly gave it up in the sixth on a fielding error.
- The Bears loaded the bases on a single and back-to-back walks in the bottom of the sixth before the Terriers earned a force out at home and allowed two runs to score on a throwing error.
- Down to the final three outs, BU rallied for the third straight inning with Doherty collecting her fifth RBI on a single up the middle and eventually reached third on Walsh's one-out RBI single.
- The Terriers though stranded two on base due to a pair of infield pop ups, and Brown took advantage with Laurel Moody homering to left for the 8-7 victory.
