BU (1-0) held a 4-0 lead at halftime and withstood a late rally by Siena (0-1), as the hosts rallied to twice get within a goal in the fourth quarter. However, sophomore
Luke Davis made a crucial play in the final minute, forcing a turnover and winning the ball back on the ride to eventually set up Shannehan's final goal of the day.
Shannehan finished his Terrier debut with five points (4g, 1a) to lead the BU offense. Junior
Jimmy Kohr scored two goals while senior
Jimmy O'Connell notched a goal and an assist. Freshman
Ben Morris and junior
Charlie Huntley also found the back of the net while freshman
Mike Rooney, junior
Connor Kehm and junior
Matt Freeman each had a helper.
Barnes stopped all six shots he faced in the first half as part of his outstanding 2025 debut. Kehm and sophomore
Logan Styles led BU with three caused turnovers apiece, with Kehm adding five ground balls. Freeman collected a team-high six ground balls and also had one caused turnover in his first-ever start at close defense.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first quarter was a defensive battle, with BU finally breaking through with 18 seconds to play as O'Connell found Kohr for the game's opening goal.
- The Terriers' second goal didn't take as long to develop, as Rooney fed Shannehan for a goal at 13:31 of the second quarter. Kehm made a terrific play to set up the Terriers' third goal. He forced a turnover with a fantastic hit in the middle of the field, then gathered the ground ball and pushed it ahead to Shannehan who wasted no time uncorking a shot past Andrew Arcuri (14 saves).
- Shannehan ended the half with a terrific individual effort, getting the ball at X and going around the right post before legally diving and scoring with just 7.7 seconds left in the half.
- O'Connell extended the lead to 5-0 just 1:54 into the third quarter when he converted a feed from Shannehan.
- The Saints finally got on the board with 12:05 left in the third quarter with a goal in transition and then scored 1:01 later to make it a 5-2 game.
- Kohr shook off a check to rip home his second goal of the day and push the Terriers' lead to 6-2.Â
- The teams traded goals to end the quarter, with Morris running down the right alley and finishing to make it 7-3 entering the final 15 minutes.
- Siena scored two man-up goals to cut the lead to 7-5 with 6:28 left, then quickly made it a 7-6 game with 5:58 to go.
- BU answered just 39 seconds later to restore its two-goal lead. After a Barnes save, Freeman picked up the loose ball and carried it down the field before dishing it to Huntley. The Siena defense backed off Huntley, and the junior d-middie made them pay with a rocket into the back of the net.
- The Saints had an immediate answer to get within one and nearly tied the game with BU in the 10-man ride, but Barnes raced back to the crease and knocked down the shot attempt to keep the Terriers in front with 2:00 to play.
- BU used the full shot clock on its next possession but was unable to get a goal. However, Davis rode the ball back and Shannehan beat a double team with a flag down to ice the game.
