Softball to Wrap Extended Season-Opening Road Trip With Two Midweek Games in North Carolina

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After competing in its fourth multi-team event, the Boston University softball team will conclude the 22-game season-opening road trip with two contests in the Queen City. The Terriers will first face Queens on Tuesday (March 11) at 6 p.m. and then make the short drive to defending American Athletic Conference champion Charlotte Wednesday (Match 12) at 5 p.m.

BU is coming off a 3-2 performance at the Eagle Classic in which the Terriers outscored Presbyterian, Queens and host Winthrop by a combined score of 35-5 alongside two losses to Western Carolina. The 49ers also compated at Winthrop back on Feb. 28-March 1, collecting wins against the Eagles (1-0), Youngstown (11-2) and USC Upsate (7-6) with a 6-0 loss to Marist.

TERRIER TIDBITS
  • The Terriers are 3-5 in true road games, posting two wins at FGCU (8-0, 6-4) and coming up just short in one-run contests at East Carolina (1-0) and Brown (8-7).
  • Junior Brooke Deppiesse earned her third career Patriot League Player of the Week award earlier Monday by batting .588 with a team-high nine RBIs and six runs scored over five games. She went yard three times to tie sophomore Kylie Doherty (.328) at four homers apiece and combine for 40 RBIs.
  • The two Terriers also own two triples apiece and have combined for eight doubles.
  • Freshman Biz Baglieri is the third Terrier batting over .300 at .314 with sophomore Libby Walsh (.294) and junior Megan Coyle (.286) close behind.
  • Junior Kasey Ricard (7-6, 2.13 ERA) has totaled 69 strikeouts in 72.1 innings of work, while freshman Ava Johnson (0-1) and junior Haley Ganino (0-1) have combind for 10 in 14.0 innings. Freshman Danika Nell (4-1, 3.44 ERA)  has tallied 36 strikeouts over 36.2 innings.
  • Overall, BU is batting .278 and holding opponents to .231 with a 10-2 advantage in triples and 11-8 edge in homers.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

Queens, 5-12 (Tuesday, 6 p.m.)
  • The Royals are back home after recording against North Carolina A&T with an 11-4 win and 4-0 loss last Wednesday afternoon. They are 1-6 against Power 4 programs with a 5-4 victory against Maryland.
  • Taylor Jones (.351) is batting a team-high .351, while Lauren Byrd (.242) owns four homers off eight hits with seven RBIs.
  • Four pitchers have worked at least 14 innings in the circle this season. Taylor Jones (3-2, 7.01 ERA) has tallied 27 strikeouts in 34.2 innings with Abby Craver (1-6, 5.26 ERA) earning 23 strikeouts in 37.2 innings.
  • Queens is batting .222 and holding teams to .314 with opponents owning a 15-11 advantage in homers.
  • BU won the first two meetings last season, 7-0 and 7-6, with Charlotte serving as host.
Charlotte, 13-12 (Wednesday, 5 p.m.)
  • Coming off last season's 1-2 performance at the NCAA Athens Regional, the 49ers are currently 5-1 at home with wins against Lehigh (13-4, 3-1), UAlbany (9-0, 9-0) and Ball State (9-8). They most recently opened conference play with a 2-1 record at North Texas (4-5, 8-7, 5-3) following an 11-1 (5) victory at Furman.
  • Charlotte has three 49ers batting over .300 with Jenna Lord (.356) owning 10 homers and 30 RBIs with 26 runs scored. Kari Shedrick is batting a team-high .375, while Teagan Ritchie (.303) and Savanna Nguyen (.292) own five homers apiece.
  • Four 49ers have pitched more than 23 innings. Brooke Bowling (6-3, 5.45 ERA) has totaled 37 strikeouts in 52.2 innings. Both Aubrey Yarnall (5-4, 3.87 ERA) and Abby Gawlinski (1-1, 5.03 ERA) own one save apiece.
  • Charlotte is batting .270 and holding opponents to .307 with a 24-18 advantage in homers. Opponents though lead in stolen bases, 33-22.
  • The 49ers lead the all-time series, 6-3, after BU won both meetings at Charlotte last season, 2-1 and 5-0, to snap a four-game losing streak. The Terriers' other win was a 2-0 victory that saw Whitney Tuthill ('13) pitch a no-hitter as part of a doubleheader split in 2010.
LOOKING AHEAD
  • BU will have the weekend off and then open the home schedule on Tuesday (March 18) with a doubleheader against Yale starting at 1 p.m.
  • Last season, the Terriers swept the Bulldogs in a doubleheader, 7-1 and 7-0.
