Softball Extends Home Unbeaten Streak With DH Sweep Over Yale

BOSTON – Highlighted by strong pitching and seven extra-base hits on the newly renovated turf field, the Boston University softball team opened the home schedule with a doubleheader sweep over Yale Tuesday afternoon.

Scoring 16 unanswered runs after allowing a two-run homer in the first inning of game one, the Terriers (14-10) batted .422 and held the Bulldogs (12-12) to .163 to cruise to an 8-2 win and 8-0 (5) run-rule victory. BU totaled four triples and two doubles alongside a homer to help extend the home unbeaten streak to 40 contests (39-0-1).

Junior Megan Coyle led the offense batting a combined 5-for-7 with a team-high six RBIs, while classmate Brooke Deppiesse went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and five runs scored. Senior Sydney Pecoraro was the third Terrier with 3+ hits, as she earned three RBIs and two runs scored. Helped by two walks and a pair of hits, sophomore Kylie Doherty reached home plate four times.

In the circle, junior Kasey Ricard (9-6) tallied 10 strikeouts against just one walk in a complete-game one effort, and junior Haley Ganino (1-2) limited Yale to just two hits in 4.1 innings of work. With runners at the corners in the top of the fifth of game two, Ava Johnson entered in relief to earn two outs and help seal the Terriers' sixth shutout of the season.

GAME ONE: BU - 8, Yale - 2

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Ricard opened the game with a pair of strikeouts, Ella Cross singled to third and scored on Sophie Woodridge's two-run homer off a 1-2 pitch to give Yale the early lead.
  • BU needed little time to get on the scoreboard with Doherty earning a lead-off walk and then scoring on Deppiesse's RBI triple to the right-center gap.
  • Yale managed to throw Deppiesse out at home on a grounder, but with two outs, senior Tyesha Williams plated sophomore pinch-runner Kyome Apalit on an RBI single to center.
  • Trying to break the deadlock in the top of the fifth, the Bulldogs earned a one-out walk and two-out single to put runners at the corners, but Ricard ended the threat with a foul out to left.
  • The Terriers grabbed the lead during the bottom half with Coyle singling to left to bring both Doherty (single) and Deppiesse (hit-by-pitch) home.
  • BU pulled away in the sixth with four runs off two hits and two walks, highlighted by Deppiesse's bases clearing triple that set up Pecoraro's RBI single.
  • Ricard ended the game catching a soft liner and throwing out a Bulldog at first on a grounder.
GAME TWO: BU - 8, Yale - 0 (5 inn.)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Doherty carried momentum from the sixth inning of the first contest into a lead-off triple that was followed by Deppiesse's walk and Pecoraro's RBI single.
  • After Coyle delivered an RBI single, the Terriers scored two more runs off sophomore Libby Walsh's RBI grounder and a wild pitch.
  • In the bottom of the second, the Terriers recorded three consecutive extra-base hits with Deppiesse's one-out double, Pecoraro's RBI triple and Coyle's two-run blast to left center for the 7-0 lead.
  • The Bulldogs earned a pair of walks in the top of the third, but Ganino ended the threat with a line out toward right and ground out to short.
  • BU put the game in run-rule territory in the fourth with Deppiesse hitting an infield single and eventually scoring on Coyle's one-out RBI single to center.
  • Yale tried to extend the game with a lead-off walk and one-out single to center, but the defense threw a Bulldog out at home on a double-steal attempt and earned a pop up to second.
DOUBLEHEADER NOTES
  • Making her first-ever appearance in the circle at home, Ganino earned her first career win.
  • With her first career triple, Pecoraro became the ninth Terrier to accomplish the feat this season.
  • Deppiesse recorded a pair of triples to increase her total to five in 24 games after earning six all of last year in 60 contests.
  • The Terriers improved to 16-8 all-time against Yale with their second consecutive DH sweep in the series.
UP NEXT
  • The six-time defending Patriot League regular season champ Terriers will open their title defense at Bucknell with Saturday's DH (March 22) set for a 12 p.m. start time.
  • BU has won the last 15 games, but six of those contests have been decided by one run apiece.
  • Last year, the Terriers swept the Bison in the regular season series with a pair of 1-0 decisions, including a contest that went 12 innings, and then posted a 5-2 victory in the PL tournament.
