Softball Splits DH With Win Over Winthrop, Loss to Western Carolina

ROCK HILL, S.C. – After falling late to Western Carolina in a 7-2 decision, the Boston University softball team rebounded in dominating fashion with a 12-2 victory against Winthrop Saturday evening to wrap up day two of the Eagle Classic.

The Terriers (10-9) used a season-high three homers and junior Kasey Ricard's career-high 18 strikeouts to route the Eagles (14-10), and the Catamounts (12-10) posted six runs in the top of the seventh to pull away for their fifth straight victory.

Junior Megan Coyle led the offense in the doubleheader with five hits, while classmate Brooke Deppiesse totaled four alongside four RBIs. Sophomore Kylie Doherty delivered three hits and three RBIs, and fellow sophomore Libby Walsh reached home plate a team-high three times. All four Terriers went yard as well after the team entered the day with six homers on the season.

GAME 1: Western Carolina - 7, BU - 2

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Making her first career start in the circle, junior Haley Ganino (0-1) started off with a strikeout and then found herself in trouble due to a fielding error and walk before helping the defense turn a 4-6-3 ground out double play.
  • The Terriers also had two reach base in the first inning with both Doherty and Coyle hitting back-to-back one-out singles before WCU earned a pop up and strikeout.
  • The Catamounts broke the scoreless deadlock in the top of the third with a one-out single that turned into a run thanks to a stolen base, advancing ground out and lastly, a two-out fielding error.
  • BU threatened in the bottom half with sophomore Livia Christopher singling down the left field line and advancing to second on a wild pitch with one out, but BU lined out and struck out.
  • The Terriers had two in scoring position an inning later but again came up empty on a strikeout and infield pop up.
  • WCU loaded the bases with one out against Ganino in the top of the fifth thanks to a fielding error and pair of walks, but she kept the deficit at one run with a force out at home and fly out to right.
  • Coyle tied the game with a two-out solo homer in the bottom of the fifth, but WCU pulled away in the top of the seventh with six runs off six hits, including a two-run double and two-run homer against Ganino.
  • Senior Sydney Pecoraro started the bottom half with a single that eventually led to Doherty plating a run on an RBI grounder, but the Terriers ran out of outs in defeat.
GAME 2: BU - 12, Winthrop - 2

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Deppiesse put BU ahead for good in the top of the first with a one-out solo blast on a full-count pitch to left.
  • Coyle and Pecoraro followed with back-to-back walks, but the Eagles earned an infield pop up and hard liner to third to keep the game at only 1-0.
  • Ricard (6-6) recorded at least two strikeouts in all seven innings and struck out the side in four innings to keep Winthrop's bats at bay until the seventh.
  • The Terriers added two runs in the second when Walsh earned a one-out walk and scored on Doherty's two-out, two-run homer to left.
  • Walsh scored again in the fourth by earning a lead-off walk and eventually scoring on Deppiesse's single to left.
  • Two innings later, Walsh delivered BU's third home of the game with a one-out last to right.
  • The Terriers put the game away in the seventh with seven runs thanks to three walks and five hits, including Deppiesse's two-RBI double.
  • Winthrop broke up Ricard's no-hit in the bottom half with a lead-off single and then followed with a one-out, two-run homer to left.
DOUBLEHEADER NOTES
  • Ricard's 18 strikeouts surpassed her previous high of 14 tallied last year at Army West Point and are one shy of the NCAA single-game high set earlier this season.
  • BU has now had five Terriers record a homer this season after Coyle and Walsh both went yard today.
  • Doherty now has 23 RBIs this season through 19 contests after totaling 37 in 56 games played last year as a freshman.
  • Pecoraro has recorded four hits this weekend after totaling three combined hits over the previous two seasons.
UP NEXT
  • BU will conclude the Winthrop Eagle Classic Sunday (March 9) against Queens at 10 a.m.
  • The Terriers won both meetings last season, 7-0 and 7-6, with Charlotte serving as host.
