BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In a see-saw affair featuring a combined 31 hits, the Boston University softball team ended the road schedule with a 13-10 loss at Lehigh Sunday afternoon.
The Terriers (31-17, 11-4 PL) faced a five-run deficit entering the top of the seventh and rallied to put the tying run at first base before the Mountain Hawks (25-22, 13-5 PL) caught a hard liner at second to secure the win.
Besides robbing Lehigh of a home run with a stellar leaping catch in left, freshman
Camryn Lyons helped BU at the plate, hitting 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while sophomore
Kylie Doherty collected a team-high three hits alongside three runs scored. Sophomore
Kyomi Apalit tallied three RBIs, and senior
Tyesha Williams batted 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.
For the Mountain Hawks, Rory Dudley posted six RBIs, thanks in part to Kelly Fricer's 3-for-5 performance at the top of the lineup. Maddy Schmeiser batted 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Lindsey Martin hit 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mountain Hawks threatened in the first with a lead-off single and sacrifice bunt, but freshman Danika Nell kept the game scoreless by earning a pair of ground outs.
- BU struck first in the top of the second, as senior Sydney Pecoraro reached first base on a hit-by-pitch, took second on Williams' single, advanced to third on Lyons' sac bunt and scored on Apalit's RBI sac fly to right.
- Helped by a BU defensive miscue, Lehigh quickly responded in the botton half by loading the bases on a single, walk and error to help set up a two-RBI single through the right side.
- After Nell kept the deficit at one run on a pair of fly outs, Doherty smoked an 0-2 pitch to left to tie the game with her 12th homer of the season.
- Junior Brooke Deppiesse followed with the first of her three walks and eventually scored on Williams' two-out, RBI single to left fo retake the lead, 3-2.
- Lehigh came back in the fourth by loading the bases on two singles and an error to set up Dudley's bases-clearing double against Nell and the ensuing RBI sac fly against freshman Ava Johnson (4-3).
- Down but not out, the Terriers kept the pressure on Lehigh in the top of the fifth with four runs off two walks and three hits, including a two-RBI single from Lyons to pull ahead, 7-6.
- The Mountain Hawks retook the lead for good during the bottom half with five runs off six hits, including Dudley's three-run homer against junior Kasey Ricard.
- After BU scored a run thanks to back-to-back singles from Doherty and Deppiesse along with a Lehigh fielding error in right, the Mountain Hawks posted three extra-base hits against Nell for the 13-8 advantage on the scoreboard entering the seventh inning.
- The Terriers mounted one last rally in the top of the seventh, earning three straight singles, including an RBI hit from Apalit.
- After Lehigh made its third pitching change and Deppiesse loaded the bases on her third walk, Coyle kept BU alive on an RBI single before Maddy Clark claimed the save with a line out toward second.
