Lane Hutson Wins Calder Trophy as NHL Rookie of the Year

June 10, 2025

NEW YORK - Former Boston University men's ice hockey standout and current Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson is the 2024-25 recipient of the Calder Memorial Trophy, presented "to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition," as selected by the Professional Hockey Writers Association.

Hutson is the second Terrier to receive this honor, as Chris Drury won the Calder after the 1998-99 season. He was one of two Terriers to be a finalist for this year's award, as former BU teammate and current San Jose Sharks forward Macklin Celebrini finished third in voting. As the first choice on 165 of the 191 ballots and a unanimous top-two pick, Hutson was a dominant winner with 1,832 voting points. Celebrini earned 11 first-place votes and 1,104 points.

Playing in all 82 games for Montreal, Hutson notched six goals and added 60 assists for 66 points. He matched Larry Murphy for the most assists by a rookie defenseman in NHL history while his 66 points trailed only Murphy, Brian Leetch and Gary Suter for the most by a rookie blue liner. Hutson also set a Canadiens record for most assists by a rookie and most points by a rookie defenseman in a single season, surpassing Chris Chelios for both records. Hutson led all NHL rookies in time on ice (1,864:07 – nearly 500 more minutes than any other skater), power-play assists (25) and power-play points (26) as he helped Montreal return to the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since the 2020-21 season.

In two seasons with the Terriers, Hutson was twice named a First Team All-American and a top-10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award. He was a two-time Hockey East First Team All-Star and New England Division I All-Star, and was also selected as New England's Top Defenseman in both his seasons on Comm. Ave. Hutson won the 2023 Walter Brown Award as the top American-born men's college hockey player in New England and was also chosen as Hockey East and New England Rookie of the Year. He totaled an impressive 97 points on 30 goals and 67 assists in 77 career games, which led all active NCAA defensemen. He recorded 49 points as a sophomore on 15 goals and 34 assists, which bested his total of 48 points (15g, 33a) from the 2022-23 season. Hutson finished his BU career as a plus-39, including a plus-30 mark in league play.
