BOSTON - The Boston University field hockey team opened its 2025 campaign with a 3-2 shootout loss at home to Providence on Friday at New Balance Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Providence scored on its first shot of the game as Piper Cline tipped in a bid from Carly van Benten just 3:09 into the contest.
- The Terriers would get an equalizer before the opening quarter ended as junior Maggie Driscoll found Lauro off a restart in the right side of the circle, where she blasted a high shot to the far corner at the 13:29 mark.
- The Friars earned the game's first two corners in the second quarter but BU successfully defended them to keep it a 1-1 affair at the half.
- The Terriers took the lead in the 45th minute off a flurry on a corner.
- After an initial shot by junior Alex Purcell was saved, classmate Bella Bergner forced a PC defender to make a save on a rebound attempt, allowing Coulo to punch in the loose ball at the goalmouth for a 2-1 lead.
- The one-goal edge lasted just over two minutes, however, as van Basten snuck a ball to Johanna Mahner.
- Chun made five of her seven saves after halftime, including three impressive stops that kept the Friars from regaining the lead.
- Junior Maggie Driscoll and sophomore Shea Freda each had defensive saves for the Terriers with the score at 2-2.
- BU had the better of the chances in the first overtime but could not take advantage of them.
- The Friars kept the Terriers on their heels in the second extra session before the teams headed to the shootout.
- Neither team converted in the first round while both were successful in the second.
- The Friars got conversions in the third and fourth rounds while stopping BU's attempts to clinch the victory.
