Women's Soccer Blanked By 17th-Ranked Brigham Young

September 29, 2001

The Brigham Young University women's soccer team, ranked number 17 in the nation, scored four unanswered goals within a 10-minute span of the second half en route to a 4-0 win over the visiting Terriers on Saturday evening (September 29th).

It marked the second straight 4-0 loss suffered by the Terriers during their brief two-game series in Utah. On Thursday night (September 27th), B.U. also fell victim to a strong-second half outburst by their hosts as they fell to the University of Utah. Trailing by just a 1-0 margin at the end of the first half, B.U. gave up three second-half goals to the Utes in the loss.

Against Brigham Young, B.U., which is now 4-3-1 this season, battled to a 0-0 tie through the first 45 minutes of action. The Cougars, who improved their record to 6-2-1, did dominate the statistics, outshooting the Terriers, 14-2. However, sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Clinton (Valley Stream, NY), was outstanding in the Terrier goal, as she turned aside seven shots.

In the second half, the Cougars again held a one-sided advantage in the shots, 13-1. Unlike the first half, though, they were able to put the ball in the goal.

Jennie Christianson scored what proved to the game-winner at 53:52, when she scored her first goal of the season. Less than two minutes later, at 55:46, Aleisha Cramer also scored her first goal of the season to increase BYU's lead to 2-0. Jeni Viernes made it 3-0 with her second goal of the season at 57:55. Kim Devine closed out the scoring at 63:05 with her second goal of the season.

Clinton, who played the first 73:07 of the game, finished the game with seven saves and was charged with the loss as she yielded the four goals. Senior Danielle Demers (Portland, ME) played the final 16:53 and had four saves.

The Terriers will try to end their two-game losing streak on Tuesday (October 2nd) when they travel to Boston College for a 3:00 p.m. game.
