RESULTS
BOSTON - The Terrier men's track and field team finished first among America East teams and third overall at the 36th Annual New England Indoor Track and Field Championship at the TTC on Feb. 27-28. Senior Dan Coval (Newton, PA) and junior Andre Nacaxe (Goiania, Brazil) each captured individual titles.
Nacaxe had the first win for B.U. in the 500-meter run. His prelim time of 1:03.59 topped his heat and sent him to the final where he finished in 1:02.27 for the title. Coval's win came in the 5000-meter run, as he bested a field of 23 runners with a time of 14:17.13. A third win for the Terriers came in the 4x800-meter relay, in which freshman Phil Shaw (Andover, MA), senior Jochen Dieckfoss (Tuebingen, Germany), sophomore Phil Putis (Chelmsford, MA), and freshman Nick Goodman (Watertown, MA) combined for a total time of 7:41.69 to oust the 20 other competing teams.
In addition to the three title wins, the Terriers had a handful of second-place finishes. The first was in the one mile run, when Dieckfoss, a four-time America East cross country champion, glided into second place with a time of 4:07.03 in the final. Shaw finished eighth in the same race, finishing in 4:16.32.
Putis added another second-place finish in the 1000-meter run. Finishing in 2:28.81 in the prelim, he went on to finish the final in 2:27.66. The 4x400-meter relay team of Colin Rose, sophomore Lucjan Zaborowski (Chorzow, Poland), freshman Matt Howard (San Antonio, TX), and Nacaxe put up the final second-place finish, with a time of 3:14.10.
Other solid Terrier performances came from Howard and Zaborowski in the 200-meter dash. Each won their prelim to advance to the final, where Howard finished sixth with a time of 22.20 and Zaborowski finished ninth with a time of 22.46.
In the 800-meter run, Goodman crossed the finish line in 1:52.10 to earn sixth place, while fellow Massachusetts-native senior Jordan Jones (Medford, MA) garnered a fourth-place finish in the 3000-meter run with a time of 8:21.66.
Finally, rounding out Terrier scoring, junior Jeff McAulay (Poughkeepsie, NY) finished seventh in the long jump with a distance of 22'1". The Terriers received a total of 68 points to finish third behind UConn (162) and Rhode Island (86).
The men's track team will see action this weekend as they host the IC-4A Championships at the TTC on March 6-7, 2004.
