BOSTON – The Boston University women’s soccer team continues to receive postseason honors, as six women’s soccer players were named to the Soccer Buzz Northeast Region teams. Headlining the group is senior co-captain Erica Lee, who was named to the first team.
Lee was BU’s lone representative on the Soccer Buzz first team, while senior Lauren Erwin and sophomore Marisha Schumacher-Hodge made appearances on the second team. Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Dreyer was placed on the third team, and freshmen Corie Halasz and Farrell McClernon earned all-freshman honors.
A starter since her first year, Lee (Oakton, Va.) was the backbone of the Terrier’s defense all season. She has started in all but two games in four years, and has garnered numerous accolades as an all-rookie selection and honorable mention in subsequent seasons.
Erwin (Orange, Conn.) proved to be a vital part to the Terriers’ offense throughout her four-year career. Entering the 2006 campaign, Lauren was 15th all-time in BU scoring with 29 points, and vaulted to ninth place with 46 career points by the end of this season. She is eighth all-time in career goals with 19.
This season’s America East Midfielder of the Year, Schumacher-Hodge controlled the midfield all season and started in each of the Terriers’ 21 games. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native amassed three goals and four assists during the 2006 campaign, including one game winner. Schumacher-Hodge took the majority of the Terriers’ corner kicks this season. In corner kick situations, BU has scored three goals in 2006.
Dreyer (New Rochelle, N.Y.) had a banner year in her senior campaign, rewriting the record books. Her 12 shutouts in 2006 broke an 11-year old record originally set by Kara Lange in 1995. Dreyer’s career 0.626 GAA is good for second in the school annals. She is 12th in the nation in goals-against-average (0.514) and 29th in save percentage (0.851).
Halasz (Milford, Conn.) started in every game she saw action in this season, playing as a fullback. A forward during her pre-collegiate career, Halasz made the switch to defense when she arrived at BU. The rookie proved to be adept at the switch and became a staple in the Terriers’ stingy backfield. At the end of the season, Halasz was rewarded as an AE First Team honoree.
McClernon made an immediate impact on the Terrier offense and by season’s end was the team’s leader in goals (7) and second in points (16). The West Chester, Pa., native made an appearance in all 21, starting 20. McClernon tallied three game-winning goals throughout the season, including two in overtime. The first one came against Boston College on Aug. 25 and again on Sept. 25 against Yale. McClernon also netted game winner over then-No. 22 Maine on Sept. 28.
The Terriers finished the season with a 13-5-3 overall record and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
