BOSTON – The Boston University women’s ice hockey team (12-15-4, 5-11-2 HE) defeated the University of Maine (15-7-6, 7-7-4 HE), 2-1, on Saturday, Feb. 18 at Walter Brown Arena. Freshman Allyse Wilcox (Grand Blanc, Mich.) held off a strong Maine attack late in the third period to finish the day with 38 saves and the game’s first star. Freshman Gina Kearns (Norwood, Pa.) and sophomore Stephanie Armstrong (Stoneham, Mass.) each scored a goal for the Terriers, as BU avenged a 7-0 loss to the Black Bears on Jan. 28.
“I thought today was a great showing,” said Head Coach Brian Durocher. “In our last game against Maine we weren’t there mentally, so it showed a lot of character and pride for these ladies to bounce back the way they did.”
The Black Bears got on the board first at 10:36 of the first period when Sheri Wauters buried the rebound from a Pam Patterson blast. Also assisting on the play was Karine Senecal. Maine finished the period with a 13-2 advantage in shots.
The Terriers started the second period on the power-play and generated some quality scoring opportunities. Midway through the second period junior Jessica Lortie (Cooper City, Fla.) had an excellent opportunity when she found herself with the puck and an open net at the side of the crease. It appeared to be an easy goal, but Maine goaltender Genevieve Turgeon made an exceptional toe-save to preserve the 1-0 lead.
The Terriers were finally rewarded at 17:59 of the second period when Kearns knocked in a loose puck in the crease. Junior Cara Hendry (Calgary, Alta.) skated down the right side boards, putting a shot on goal. After a pile up for the loose puck, Kearns came out the winner as she tipped it just inside the left post.
BU carried the momentum into the third period, generating good pressure on Turgeon and more than half of the total shots. The Terriers got a huge boost after killing :57 of a 5-3 Maine power-play. Maine narowly missed a few chances, while Wilcox made multiple key saves.
The Terriers made it 2-1 at 4:27 of the period when Armstrong tipped in a rebound off a Nicki Wiart’s (Queensbury, N.Y.) shot. Freshman Laurel Koller (St. Paul, Minn.) skated down the right side boards and fired a hard shot on goal. Turgeon made the initial save and stopped Wiart’s attempt on the rebound, but couldn’t control the puck before Armstrong tipped it in.
The Terriers and Black Bears faceoff again, tomorrow, Feb. 19, at Walter Brown Arena at 3 p.m. Sunday’s game is the final home game for the Terriers this season.
