BOSTON -- The Boston University athletic department achieved an overall Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 95 percent and had seven current varsity teams that recorded a 100 percent GSR, according to data released by the NCAA.
The overall GSR data represents an aggregate average of the incoming classes from 1997-98, 1998-99, 1999-2000 and 2000-01. The team scores reflect an aggregate average of that particular team's incoming students from the same time period.
Men's and women's basketball, field hockey, women's golf, men's swimming, women's crew and women's tennis all earned perfect scores of 100 percent. BU was one of just eight schools to earn a perfect score in both men's and women's basketball.
Seven additional teams -- women's cross country and track, women's lacrosse, men's and women's soccer, softball, women's swimming and wrestling -- each had GSR scores of at least 90 percent. Men's ice hockey earned a GSR of 88 percent.
"This is a proud moment for Terrier Nation," Director of Athletics Mike Lynch said. "We congratulate all of our student-athletes for yet again proving that Boston University strives for success not only on the playing field, but also in the classroom. We also want to recognize the efforts of our coaches and staff members who take tremendous pride in contributing to the accomplishments of our student-athletes."
The GSR was developed to provide graduation data of student-athletes who receive athletics aid at Division I institutions more accurately than the federal rates that had been calculated based solely on freshmen matriculation. It includes in its calculation students who transfer into institutions, and subtracts those who leave their institutions prior to graduation as long as they would have been academically eligible to compete had they remained. The GSR credits a school for students who graduate within six years of entering their institution.
The overall GSR for all Division I student-athletes for this time period was 77 percent. More information about the GSR report is available at the NCAA's official website, www.ncaa.org.
