BOSTON - Sophomore Aly Hinton hit a career-high 35 points and junior Christine Kinneary tied a single-game school record for assists with 14 as the Boston University women's basketball team (3-1) rallied from a 10-point deficit to defeat cross-town rival Northeastern, 94-84, on Monday evening at Case Gym. Hinton is the first Terrier since March 11, 2005 to score 30 or more points in a single game.
The Terriers got 53.2 percent of their points off the bench as Hinton, the America East's Player of the Game, and senior Corinne Jean combined for 50 points - 33 in the second half. BU out-rebounded the Huskies by a 33-26 margin, dished out 25 assists and earned seven steals. In addition, the Terriers were 15-for-18 from the charity stripe.
For the fourth straight game, senior Kasey Devine recorded double-figure scoring with 17 points, while leading the squad with seven rebounds. Jean tallied a season-high 15 points, and senior Cheri Raffo put together another strong performance with 10 points.
The Huskies led by as much as many as 10 points with 15 minutes left in the game; however, a 3-pointer from Jean sparked an 8-0 run that cut the deficit to two within two minutes. BU reclaimed the lead when Raffo hit a trey at 12:20.
In a furious rush to the finish, the Huskies remained within five points of the Terriers and took a one-point lead with 3:43 remaining in regulation; however the home squad closed out the game on an 11-0 run to earn the victory.
In the first half, the Huskies took a 47-42 lead into the locker room at halftime after shooting 55.2 percent from the field, aided by Lucia Pablos' 14 points and Shaleyse Smallwood's 10.
Northeastern jumped out to an early lead, but after trading baskets with the Terriers, junior Amarachi Umez-Eronini gave BU its first advantage of the game. The Huskies quickly recovered; however, there would be four lead changes in the first frame. At 11:09 Kendra Walton nailed a 3-pointer, and the Huskies maintained the advantage for the remainder of the half.
The Terriers will travel to Greensboro, N.C., on Friday, Nov. 23 to take on host UNC-Greensboro at 1:00 p.m. in UNC-G tournament. On Saturday, Nov. 24, BU will face either North Carolina A&T or UNC-Asheville on the final day of the tourney.
