Women's Basketball Takes Down UMass, 72-60

BOSTON - Junior forward Jesyka Burks-Wiley (Kansas City, Mo.) recorded the first Terrier double-double of the season as the Boston University women's basketball team improved to 5-2 with a 72-60 win over Atlantic 10 foe UMass (2-4) Wednesday evening in Case Gym. Burks-Wiley recorded 20 points and 10 rebounds in the victory.

Junior guard Amarachi Umez-Eronini (Washington, D.C.) earned America East Player of the Game honors with her 18 points on 8-for-12 shooting and nine rebounds. She also dished out three assists, and earned two steals and one block. Senior guard Cheri Raffo (Morristown, N.J.) contributed 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting. Stefanie Gerardot led the Minutewomen with 13 points. The Terriers held UMass' leading scorer, Kate Mills, to 10 points, after the senior forward had averaged 18.3 points all season.

The Terriers posted 15 second-chance points and converted on 17 points off turnovers. BU was 42.4 percent from the floor and 40.0 percent from behind the arc, while holding UMass to 34.4 percent field goal shooting and 25.0 percent 3-point shooting.

By the end of the first half, BU already had two players in double figures as Umez-Eronini posted 11 and Burks-Wiley netted 10.

In the first frame, BU never trailed, however, the Minutewomen drew to within one on three separate occasions through the first 12 minutes. At the 7:38 mark, Umez-Eronini went in for the layup, drew the foul and converted on the three-point play to give BU the two-possession lead.

Over the next three minutes, BU increased its lead to nine to move the score to 25-16. After the Minutewomen came to within four points one final time, the Terriers pulled away scoring six points in the final two minutes of the stanza.

BU used a 19-4 run in the first nine minutes of the second half to up its lead to 22 and took its largest lead of the game, 59-36, just three minutes later.

BU maintained a comfortable advantage, however, with time running out UMass made one final push in the final 3:11. Sakera Young sparked an 11-0 run on two made free throws to end the game, but, the BU lead proved too much to overcome.

The Terriers travel to St. John's on Saturday, Dec. 1 for a 2:00 p.m. tip off.
