It was a tale of two halves as the Boston University women's basketball team overcame a 10-point deficit to defeat Brown 59-38 on Wednesday evening, backed by senior Kasey Devine's first double-double of the season. Devine netted 16 points and grabbed 10 boards. The Terriers improve to 6-3 overall, while the Bears drop to 1-9 on the season.
A game-changing 21-4 run midway through the second half gave the Terriers a commanding 21-point advantage with three minutes remaining in regulation. BU was a sterling 20-for-23 from the charity stripe, while out-rebounding the Bears, 45-40. BU took advantage of its 17 offensive boards and converted on 17 second-chance points. The Terriers' bench posted 23 points to Brown's six.
Sophomore Aly Hinton chipped in 12 points, while senior Cheri Raffo earned three steals.
After netting the first bucket of the game, the Terriers fell behind 14-4 after six minutes of action as Brown played aggressively on the offensive front. Junior Amarachi Umez-Eronini broke the Terriers' four-minute scoreless streak with a jumper at 12:59. The junior guard cut the deficit to five on the ensuing three-point play. Coupled by tough defense and strong rebounding the Terriers drew to within three at 10:21.
Junior Christine Kinneary pulled BU to within one - its closest since three minutes into the contest - with two free throws to move the score to 21-20.
Hinton gave the Terriers their first lead since 18:37 on a jumper with 2:36 remaining in the stanza. However, the Bears took the slim 23-22 advantage into the locker rooms at halftime following two made free throws from Natalie Bonds.
In the first half, Umez-Eronini and Devine combined for 16 of the Terriers' 22 points, while the team went a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe. Brown held the 22-19 advantage in rebounding.
The Terriers turned things around in the second half as junior Jesyka Burks-Wiley gave the squad a four-point lead, 31-27, on a trey at 16:37. Another 3-pointer less than a minute later from senior Corinne Jean upped the lead to five after Brown nailed a jumper.
A layup by Jean at 12:44 sparked a 21-4 run to give BU a dominating 57-36 lead with 2:11 remaining. Hinton nailed two free throws with less than a minute to go and Brown nabbed the last basket to move the final score to 59-38.
BU will return to the court on Tuesday, Dec. 11 when it travels cross town to face Harvard at 7:00 p.m.
