Game NotesBOSTON - Boston University will match-up with Stony Brook University on Saturday, Feb. 10 at noon. The game will be televised locally on NESN as the America East Game of the Week. The Terriers enter the contest with a 12-11 overall record and 4-6 conference mark, while Stony Brook is 12-10 and 8-2 in the America East.
THE TERRIERS: Boston University has opened the second half of the conference slate with two consecutive wins over UMBC and Vermont. The Terriers have won three of their last five contests, and freshman Aly Hinton has been an offensive threat, averaging 13.2 points per game in those five games. Junior tri-captain Cheri Raffo also has stood out with 10.4 ppg since Jan. 23.
LAST TIME OUT: Freshman Aly Hinton posted a career-high coring effort for the second consecutive game to help lead the Boston University women’s basketball team past the University of Vermont, 61-49, on Feb. 7 at UVM’s Patrick Gym. Hinton scored a game-high 22 points to go along with 11 rebounds, as the Terriers improved to 12-11 overall and 4-6 in the America East. The Catamounts fell to 15-7 overall and 5-4 in conference action. In the second half alone Hinton posted 12 points,, as the Richboro, Pa., native earned BU’s America East Player of the Game honors. Senior tri-captain Erica Kovach contributed 12 points and junior tri-captain Cheri Raffo added 11. The Terriers held the Catamounts to their lowest shooting percentage since their first game of the season against UMass, as UVM shot 27 percent in the contest.
SCOUTING THE SEAWOLVES: The Seawolves are a tough team on the road, earning a record of 4-1 in conference-road action. Mykeema Ford and Jessica Smith are leading the Seawolves in scoring with 19.0 ppg and 16.3 ppg, respectively. Smith is also the team’s leader in rebounds per game.
BU VS. STONY BROOK: Stony Brook joined the America East Conference during the 2001-02 season, commencing the series by defeating Boston University 67-60 on Jan. 13, 2002. BU claimed its first win in the series a month later on Feb. 21, 2002, in a 62-48 decision. They met for a third and final time that year in the America East Tournament, where the Seawolves defeated the Terriers, 63-46. The following season, the Terriers picked up two wins by 88-76 and 93-51 margins, respectively. During the 2003-04 campaign the Terriers made it three in a row with a 67-66 home win. That year both games were decided by two points or less, as BU dropped a 72-70 decision on Feb. 25, 2004. Over the past two seasons, the Terriers and Seawolves have met a combined six times, two during the regular season and two AE conference tournament games. The Terriers have won four of the last seven games, including both tournament games in 2005 and 2006.
LAST TIME VS. STONY BROOK (JAN. 10, 2007): The Boston University women’s basketball team dropped a 69-48 decision to Stony Brook University on Jan. 10 at Stony Brook’s SBU Arena. Junior tri-captain Cheri Raffo led with a team-high 14 points, while senior tri-captain Katie Meinhardt also recorded double digits with 10 points. Stony Brook outrebounded the Terriers by a 47-26 margin and scored 14 second-chance points. Raffo earned co-America East Player of the Game honors.
NEXT TIME OUT: Boston University travels to Albany on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. BU owns a 10-2 overall record against Albany. Earlier in the season, BU defeated Albany, 72-64, for the Terriers’ first conference win of the season.
MAKE IT A DOUBLE: Freshman Aly Hinton has successfully posted back-to-back double-doubles for the Terriers this week. She scored 18 points and 11 rebounds on Feb. 4 versus UMBC on Sunday, setting a new career mark, then upped that one game later with a 20-point performance that helped lead BU past UVM on Wednesday. In the Vermont game, the freshman forward also hauled in 11 rebounds. They were the first two double-doubles of her career. This is the second consecutive season, a freshman Terrier has put together back-to-back double-doubles, as Jesyka Burks-Wiley accomplished the feat last year in the AE Tournament. Against SBU, Burks-Wiley posted 16 points and 20 rebounds, then followed that up with 17 points and 10 rebounds against Hartford in the championship game.
CHARITABLE GIVING: Following a week where BU went 86.1 percent (31-of-36) from the free throw line, the Terriers leaped to second in the conference and 26th in the nation in free throw percentage. Against UMBC on Sunday, BU was 21-of-23 at the line – its highest percentage of the season when given 20 or more attempts from the charity stripe. Senior tri-captain Katie Meinhardt leads the team in free throw accuracy hitting 81.8 percent of her attempts. Overall, BU is now .744 on the season and .799 in conference games.
BU WINS BATTLE OF THE BOARDS: Against UMBC on Feb. 4, the Terriers won the battle of the boards by a 49-26 margin – matching a season high for rebounds in a game. BU grabbed 23 more boards then its opponent, the largest margin in 16 years. On March 2, 1991, BU outrebounded Northeastern, 50-21.
RAFFO EXCELS IN CONFERENCE ACTION: From Jan. 10 to Jan. 31, junior tri-captain Cheri Raffo had a six-game double-digit scoring streak going that was the longest of her career. During those six games, Raffo averaged 13.6 points per game. Since the new year, the junior guard has turned up the offense averaging 11.4 ppg in conference action. Raffo has made a habit of excelling during the conference season, last year at this time she was averaging 18.3 ppg (through nine games) and in 2004-05 posted 6.2 ppg at the same point.
UMEZ-ERONINI STEPS UP: Since the beginning of the conference slate, Amarachi Umez-Eronini has stepped up her game offensively and defensively. After earning three steals through the first 13 games, the sophomore guard has recorded six in conference action and has already surpassed her assist total (6) from the non-conference schedule with 11. She has increased her time on the court by over and is averaging 4.9 ppg. In non-conference games, Umez-Eronini averaged 10.4 minutes, and in conference action, she sees 15.8 minutes per game. She has proven to be quite adept from the charity stripe going 25-of-30 in conference action, tenth in conference-only games among AE’s athletes.
MEINHARDT TAKES SOLE POSSESSION OF NO. 10: Senior Katie Meinhardt broke into the top ten on BU’s all-time scoring list on Jan. 31 versus Hartford. The senior guard now has 1,093 career points, surpassing Annemarie Olson (’94) for the no. 10 spot.
