DURHAM, N.H. -
The eighth-ranked Boston University women's ice hockey team won the shootout after a 2-2 tie with fifth-ranked New Hampshire in Hockey East action on Thursday evening at the Whittemore Center Arena. Senior Caroline Bourdeau and freshman Jenelle Kohanchuk scored in regulation for the Terriers, who move to 5-2-2 overall and 3-0-0 in conference play after winning the shootout, 2-0. Senior goaltender Allyse Wilcox stopped both shots she saw in the shootout to help BU claim the victory.
With the score knotted at 2-2 after 65 minutes of hockey, BU participated in its first-ever Hockey East shootout. Junior Melissa Anderson was up first for the Terriers and scored before senior Gina Kearns' effort was saved by UNH netminder Kayley Herman. Wilcox stopped the shots she faced from sophomore Courtney Birchard and senior Sam Faber to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead after two rounds. Freshman defenseman Tara Watchorn was up with a chance to win it for BU and maneuvered around Herman to get a shot that she buried for the victory.
"For us to get two points here is huge for us," said Kearns, whose Terriers were previously 0-5-0 all-time at the Whittemore Center.
BU opened the scoring 4:17 into the contest when sophomore Lauren Cherewyk found Bourdeau at center ice and Bourdeau streaked up the middle to put one past New Hampshire sophomore netminder Kayley Herman.
The Wildcats leveled the score two minutes later on their first power-play opportunity of the night when senior Angela Taylor set up sophomore Julie Allen for her first collegiate goal, banging one in from the left side.
Despite being outshot by a 12-6 margin in the opening frame, the Terriers came away with the lead when Kohanchuk struck on the power play at 16:47. The rookie center scored from close range on the right side after the puck came across from the far side of the ice in front of the crease.
Midway through the second stanza, a pair of penalties gave the Wildcats a two-man advantage for 1:13, but Wilcox stymied the UNH power play.
BU's 2-1 lead held until the third period, when New Hampshire pulled even with a shorthanded goal. Taylor found senior Sam Faber on a breakaway and Faber went top shelf to tally her fifth goal of the season.
"Tonight got away from us a bit," said BU head coach Brian Durocher. "Credit Allyse Wilcox for keeping us in the game and we got a couple of bounces here and there, so we were able to get out of here with the win."
The Wildcats held a 36-18 advantage in shots on goal as Wilcox stopped 34 shots before the shootout. Herman made 16 saves at the other end for New Hampshire.
The Terriers are back at Walter Brown Arena on Saturday (Nov. 1), hosting Providence for a Hockey East clash at 3 p.m. Live streaming video is available for all home games this season through BU All-Access on GoTerriers.com.
