ALLSTON, Mass. - Behind a pair of goals from freshman Jacinda McLeod, the Boston University field hockey team earned a 3-1 road victory over Harvard on Wednesday night at Jordan Field. Junior Maryette Stuart also scored for the Terriers, who improve to 6-8 on the year.
BU overcame a strong performance from Harvard goalkeeper Cynthia Tassopoulous, who made 12 saves in a losing effort. The Crimson fell to 4-7 with the loss.
McLeod opened the scoring with the eventual game winner off a corner at the 28:38 mark. Her initial shot from the top of the circle was saved, but the rebound found its way to Nikki Lloyd and she slipped the ball back to McLeod, who blasted a shot to the lower right corner of the cage.
Just 2:15 into the second half, Stuart scored a remarkable goal when she charged towards the left post and redirected a shot from Lloyd as she was falling down parallel to the cage.
McLeod made it a 3-0 contest in the 51st minute off a perfectly executed corner with assists from senior Haley Robinson and junior Allie Dolce.
Harvard got a goal back on a corner in the 58th minute and threatened to get within one in the late stages of the game, but the Terrier defense stood strong and helped to secure the victory.
Junior Amanda Smith and redshirt freshman Julie Collins, who played the final 6:37, each made two saves in goal for the Terriers. The final stop of the night came from the stick of McLeod, who picked up her first defensive save of the season.
BU outshot Harvard, 21-13, while the Crimson held a 10-7 advantage in corners.
