CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Boston University field hockey team overcame a 17-save performance by Vermont goalkeeper Kristen Heavens, scoring two goals in the final seven minutes of regulation to earn a 2-0 victory in its America East opener on Saturday morning at Jack Barry Field. Sophomore Giovanna Monaco and freshman Nicole van Oosterom each scored for the Terriers, who improve to 4-7 overall with a 1-0 conference mark.

In the first half alone, the Terriers put forth 14 shots on goal and earned 12 corners, but Heavens and the Vermont defense held their ground and kept the game scoreless.

Monaco finally opened the scoring at the 63:13 mark when she took a pass in stride from Nikki Lloyd and darted toward the cage before slipping it by Heavens.

Just over five minutes later on the Terriers' 16th and final corner of the day, van Oosterom took a direct insert from junior Allie Dolce on the top left of the circle and blasted it to the right boards for an insurance marker at 68:22.

BU outshot Vermont, 23-2, and allowed just two corners on the day. Junior goalkeeper Amanda Smith was not forced to make a save while picking up her second shutout of the season.

The Terriers will return to action on Sunday (Oct. 4) when they play host to No. 13 Duke at Boston College's Newton Campus Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
