Amherst, Mass. - Freshman Caitlynn Moran led three Terriers in double figures, however, the Boston University women's basketball team (0-2) fell to UMass (1-0), 79-73, in overtime on Sunday afternoon. Moran poured in 20 points and sophomore Alex Young and senior Aly Hinton netted 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Hinton recorded her first double-double of the season as she brought down 10 boards in the game, while junior Kerry Cashman and sophomore Caroline Stewart swatted away three shots each. Moran finished the game with two assists and three steals in addition to her 20-point performance.
The Terriers blocked eight shots in the contest - their most since Jan. 19, 2008 when they blocked eight. The Terriers and Minutewomen each brought down 44 boards, while BU got 25 points from its bench. BU forced 21 turnovers and scored 20 off those miscues.
BU jumped out to a 10-3 lead by the 16th minute, backed by the strong play of Hinton, who scored seven points in a two-minute span. Over the next four minutes, UMass began to chip away at the lead, spurred by three-point play from Kristina Danella; however, a trey from Stewart kept BU ahead, 13-11, with 11:46 remaining in the stanza. The Terriers' outside game continued to drive the offense as freshman Chantell Alford nailed a three and classmate Kristen Sims hit a mid-range jumper after forcing a UMass turnover to extend the lead back to four, 18-14, at 10:11.
Back-to-back treys from Moran and Young brought the lead to eight, 30-22, with just over four minutes remaining in the stanza, while BU's defense maintained a strong presence with four blocks and 10 defensive rebounds by the 3:52 mark. Another trey by Young and a made free throw from Cashman extended BU's advantage to 10 points, 34-24, with less than two minutes remaining in the half.
At the break, the Terriers enjoyed a 38-30 lead, led by Hinton, Moran and Stewart - all with seven points apiece. In the first 20 minutes of the game, BU outrebounded UMass, 23-19, and blocked five shots. It forced 10 miscues, converting on 16-points off turnovers, and got 17 points from the bench.
In the second half, a 5-0 spurt by the Minutewomen moved the score to 42-39 with just over 15 minutes remaining in the stanza; however, a four-point play in which junior Kat Briggs was fouled when she hit a 3-pointer extended the lead back to 46-39.
Moran continued her tear in the game with 10-straight points for the Terriers, beginning with a crucial trey at 8:27 to extend the BU's lead from a one-possession game to six points, 55-49. Less than a minute later she sliced through the Minutewomen's defense for a layup at 7:45 and she continued to pace the offense with a jumper in the paint. Young contributed back-to-back jumpers to extend the lead to nine, 63-54, with less than five remaining in the game.
After UMass cut the lead to one, 63-62, with 1:38 remaining, BU came out of a timeout and immediately scored as Moran drove to the basket for a lay-up to move the score to 65-62. The Minutewomen again drew to within one point, however, Young nailed a mid-range jumper from the corner with 28 seconds left to keep them at arms length. With 16 seconds left UMass' Danella drew a foul shooting a 3-pointer and hit all three to tie the game and send it into overtime.
In the extra session, UMass took the four-point lead, 74-70, with less than two minutes to go and it hit its free throws down the stretch to earn the 79-73 victory.
BU will host its home opener on Wednesday night when it welcomes URI to Case Gym at 7 p.m. The game will be aired on NESN.
