QUEENS, N.Y. - The Boston University women's basketball team (1-3) fell to St. John's (3-0), 80-63, on Saturday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena. Sophomore Caroline Stewart was a force for the Terriers on the boards and in the paint, notching a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds - the first of her career - while classmate Alex Young led all scorers with 18 points.
Senior Aly Hinton had a strong second half, recording 11 points and nine boards and freshman Caitlynn Moran chipped in 11 for BU in the loss.
An 8-0 run through the first two minutes of the game by the hosts did not phase the Terriers, as they steadily climbed back. A Hinton layup got BU on the board and two buckets from Stewart helped the Terriers close the gap early. St. John's extended its lead to 19-12 with just over eight minutes to go in the half, but sophomore Kat Briggs nailed a trey, the first of the game by either team, to close the gap to four at 19-15.
St. John's answered back with a three of its own from Britney Murphy at 6:49 but a pair of free throws by senior Maggie McKemie and a Young jumper kept the Terriers in the game. Another Stewart bucket pushed the score to 29-24, but Nadirah McKenith hit a three to extend the Red Storm's lead to 35-25 with a minute to play in the first.
Young converted on two free throws at the 22-second mark but St. John's Britney Murphy hit a three-ball with five seconds on the clock gave the hosts a 38-27 halftime lead.
Da'Shena Stevens' two buckets early in the second helped the hosts to extend their double-digit lead, which reached 54-34 after a handful of costly turnovers by the Terriers. Stewart kept up her dominance on the boards and converted two nice drives midway through the second half but St. John's maintained a healthy lead.
Young went on a 6-0 scoring tear from 7:10 to 5:44 as part of her 12 second-half points, but an Elon Sidney three with nine seconds on the clock pushed the home total to 80, sealing the 80-63 final for the Red Storm.
The Terriers are back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at home against local rival Northeastern. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
