Box Score

New Haven, Conn. - Freshman Caitlynn Moran scored 18 points - 14 in the second half alone - and sophomore Alex Young netted 11; however, the Boston University women's basketball team fell, 61-57, on Wednesday night. The Terriers fall to 3-5 on the season, while the Bulldogs improve to 4-3 overall.

It was a tightly contested match-up with both teams remaining within either one or two possessions for the majority of the game and BU took an eight-point lead with seven minutes remaining in the game. However, a resilient Yale side chipped away at the deficit and reclaimed the lead with less than two minutes remaining to hold on for the slim four-point victory.

Moran led the way with 18 points on 4-for-10 shooting and a career-high nine made free throws. She also tied sophomore Caroline Stewart with a team-high seven boards. Classmate Chantell Alford also reached double figures with 10 points to go along with four steals.

Yale made it to the free throw line a total of 33 times, and it accounted for 21 of its points, while it also shot 36 percent for the game from the field. BU shot 38 percent from the field and 68 percent from the charity stripe.

The first half was a low-scoring affair as both squads' respective defenses were tough to get past and Yale took the 27-22 advantage into the locker rooms at halftime. Thirteen of Yale's first-half points came from the foul line when BU got into trouble and the Bulldogs went 13-for-18 from the charity stripe in the first 20 minutes of the game.

BU outshot Yale, 14-8, in the paint; however, neither team was able to extend its lead beyond two possessions, and the largest advantage of the half came with six minutes left when Yale led by six. BU closed the gap at halftime as Moran scored four straight from the foul line.

In the second half, BU quickly closed the gap as Young nailed the team's first trey of the game, and Moran continued her strong performance from the charity stripe with two more free throws.

At the 16:59 mark, BU grabbed its first lead since nine minutes into the contest, as Young hit the back-end of her two free throw attempts to move the score to 28-27. From there, the two teams remained within one possession of each other, trading basket-for-basket until Moran nailed a three at the top of the arc to take a 41-37 lead with seven minutes left. BU then grabbed a seven-point lead, 48-41, when Moran converted on a three-point play at 4:51.

A resilient Yale side chipped away at the deficit and brought the game to within one point, 55-54, with 1:47 remaining when Melissa Colborne hit both her free throw attempts. On the next two possessions, the Bulldogs reclaimed the lead, 57-55, with a layup by Yoyo Greenfield and in the waning seconds of the game, she hit both her free throw attempts to secure the 61-57 victory.

BU will host Marist at Case Gym on Saturday (Dec. 12) at 2 p.m.
