BOSTON - With a share of the regular-season title and postseason play on the line, the Boston University women's basketball team (19-6, 13-0 AE) hosts Maine (4-23, 2-12 AE) on Sunday (March 1) at noon in the first game in a doubleheader with the men's team. The Terriers are fresh off a thrilling overtime win at Hartford, while the Black Bears are looking to snap a two-game skid.
THE TERRIERS: The Terriers, winners of 14 straight, need one win to secure at least a share of the regular-season title - its first since 1988 - and a berth in postseason tournament play. BU currently sits atop the America East regular-season standings with a perfect 13-0 record - two games ahead of second-place Hartford - and is aiming to become the first conference team to go undefeated in league play since Maine accomplished the feat in the 2002-03 season. On four occasions an America East school has gone unbeaten - Maine (1995-96; 2002-03) and Vermont (1991-92; 1992-93).
The Terriers' senior class is spearheading this historic run as each member of the four-person group is averaging double-figure scoring, led by Jesyka Burks-Wiley with 18.2 points per game. Kristi Dini (12.4), Christine Kinneary (11.6) and Amarachi Umez-Eronini (10.7) follow closely behind. Burks-Wiley is also the team's rebounding leader with 7.5 rpg, while Dini is the single-season (77) and career (176) leader in 3-pointers. Kinneary, the Terriers' floor marshal, leads the league and is ranked ninth nationally in assist/turnover ratio (2.17), and Umez-Eronini is the squad's defensive stalwart with a team- and league-leading 2.7 steals per game.
BU boasts the conference's best scoring offense (72.6 ppg), field goal percentage (.430), free throw percentage (.729) and turnover margin (+3.12).
THE BLACK BEARS: The Black Bears enter Sunday's contest after back-to-back losses to Binghamton, 66-46, and Vermont, 61-44, but had previously picked up victories vs. Albany, 59-51, and New Hampshire, 57-49. Junior Brittany Boser leads the squad in scoring (10.3 ppg), rebounding (5.0 rpg), blocks (0.9 pg), field goal percentage (.450) and free throw percentage (.847, a conference best). As a team, Maine is shooting .346 from the field, .300 from 3-point range and .712 from the charity stripe.
BU VS. MAINE: The series, which Maine leads 40-23, dates back to the 1977-78 season, when the Terriers defeated the Black Bears, 66-54. BU won the first five games, before suffering four consecutive setbacks. Throughout the late `80s, the teams traded wins, before Maine surged as a program in the `90s. From Jan. 24, 1990, to Dec. 11, 1999, the Black Bears won 18-of-23 games, during which time they picked up six conference championships and made six NCAA tournament appearances. Over the past nine seasons, Maine has taken 16-of-25 games, but earlier this year the Terriers' snapped a seven-game losing streak at Alfond Arena with an 87-72 victory - a stretch that dates back to Feb. 24, 2002.
POSTSEASON PROGNOSTICATIONS: With a victory on Sunday, the Terriers would guarantee themselves at least a share of the regular-season title - its first since 1988 - and the top seed in the America East tournament. In addition, the Terriers would secure a spot in postseason action, as the America East Conference receives an automatic bid to the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) for the highest-finishing team in the conference's regular-season standings that does not advance to the NCAA tournament.
CLASS ACTS: The Terriers' senior class of Jesyka Burks-Wiley, Kristi Dini, Christine Kinneary and Amarachi Umez-Eronini recently became the all-time winningest class in program history following its thrilling 80-75 victory over Hartford on Wednesday. They currently own a .615 winning percentage over four seasons - the best in 19 years - with a 72-45 record.
The quartet surpassed the class of '90, which was 71-42 (.628). Lynn Bay, Renee Doctor, Marjorie Haney, Lynne Ranando and Tia Theriault were members of that class.
TERRIERS AT AGGANIS ARENA: The Terriers have played at Agganis Arena six times since the arena was built in the 2004-05 season and they currently own a 4-2 record at the facility following its 81-63 victory over Binghamton on Jan. 14.
THE BURKS-WILEY FILE: Senior Jesyka Burks-Wiley is having her best offensive season as a Terrier and has established herself as a frontrunner for the 2009 America East Player of the Year. Below is a list of Burks-Wiley accomplishments in her senior campaign.
In 2008-09 Burks-Wiley...
• has recorded seven double-doubles - third in the conference this season.
• has been named the America East Player of the Week five times - including four straight in the month of January. She is the only player this season to accomplish the feat.
• earned WBCA National Player of the Month Honorable Mention for the month of January.
• is averaging 18.2 points per game - the most by a Terrier since Katie Terhune posted 18.6 in 2001-02.
• poured in a career-best 32 points at Maine - one point shy of a conference high.
• has surpassed 30 points once, 20 points on 12 occasions and 10 rebounds seven times, and is the only AE players appearing in the top three in both of those categories.
• became the 18th player in school history to surpass the 1,000 point plateau.
• became the eighth Terrier in the program's 34 years to eclipse 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.
• is currently the program's ninth all-time leading scorer with 1,178 points.
• has scored 454 points this season - the ninth-best single-season scoring output in school history.
• has led the team to its best start in program history.
WINNING RESOLUTIONS: The start of the New Year has been good to the Terriers as they went unbeaten in the months of January and February. Following its Dec. 30 loss to St. John's, 74-66, Boston University turned it on in the new year, embarking on a program record 14-game winning streak - eight on the road and six at home.
BU is off to its best start in conference play in program history. The Terriers' next best league start was in the 1987-88 when they went 9-0.
TERRIERS REMAIN UNBEATEN IN AE CONFERENCE: The Terriers are now just one of seven teams in the country that are unbeaten in their respective conference.
