BOSTON - In another thrilling contest between two cross-town rivals, the No. 14 Boston University men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to Boston College on Friday night at Nickerson Field in front a boisterous crowd of 1,907 attendees. Edvin Worley scored the lone goal in the 57th minute to help the Eagles improve to 3-3-0, while the Terriers fall to 3-2-1 on the season.
The Terriers had a few opportunities to tie the game shown live on the NSCAA Fox Soccer Channel College Game of the Week, especially in the 89th minute, when the Eagles were called with a foul and yellow card outside their box, setting up a free kick opportunity for BU.
Sophomore Michael Bustamante kicked the ball around the defenders, but just didn't have enough bite or height on it toward the near post, as freshman goalie Justin Luthy moved to his left to catch it and preserve the shutout.
BU outshot BC, 13-10, led by America East player of the game Samuel Appiah and freshman Ade Akinsanya with three each. The senior Appiah had the Terriers' first shot on goal 38 seconds into the match. Colin Murphy had four for the Eagles.
Senior goalie Hrafn Davidsson had three saves, while Luthy tallied two for BC's third shutout win of the season.
Junior Aaron O'Neal came close to scoring at 26:48 in the first half but his arching shot from the left side of the box from 15 yards out hit the crossbar and bounced away. The game marked the first time at the half that the Terriers entered the locker room with neither team scoring.
The Eagles quickly took the momentum when Charlie Rugg found an open Worley on the right side who then kicked past a diving Davidsson to take the lead.
With the 1-0 victory, the Eagles increased their lead in the all-time series to 20-17-8, having now won nine of the last 10 meetings this decade.
The Terriers will next travel to New York to face Columbia on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 2 p.m.
